7-Zip 18.05: Better performance and security

The latest release of the highly customized file compression application is considered a kind of fine-tuning.

7-Zip 18.05: Better performance and security

7-Zip 18.05 has achieved significant acceleration for certain operations and is also protected against the security flaw that was discovered in the RAR module (CVE-2018-10115). Let's take a look at what the new version has brought:

  • Single-threaded decoding of LZMA / LZMA2 was improved by 64% on 30-bit systems and by 32% in a 3-bit environment.
  • 7-Zip is capable of multithreaded decoding for 7z / LZMA2 files when there are multiple independent data packets in the LZMA2 stream.
  • 7-Zip is capable of multithreaded decoding for xz files when there are multiple blocks in the xz stream.
  • Releases of 7-Zip prior to 18.05 produced critical bugs in Windows 10 Fall Creative Update (1709) and earlier systems due to large memory boards. The new version improves on this as well.
  • LZMA / LZMA2 compression became 8% faster at the fast / fastest compression level, 3% at the normal / ultra level.

If you come across RAR files often, you should definitely upgrade to the new version, because 18.05 eliminates the vulnerabilities. The version number of the current release can be found under "About 7-Zip…" by opening the Help menu item.
