5.1 channel surround sound on mobile phone

At the 2010 GSMA Mobile World Congress, LG Electronics and Dolby Laboratories, Inc. unveiled for the first time 5.1-channel surround sound on a mobile phone based on Dolby® Mobile technology and an LG Android-powered smartphone.

“As one of the leaders in the mobile industry, LG strives to offer features in its phones that provide an even higher level of user experience to its customers. Nothing exemplifies our efforts to improve the performance of multimedia and smartphones better than this development. Together with Dolby, we are confident that this will set a new standard for sound quality for both mobile devices and the mobile industry as a whole. ” Said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

Dolby Mobile is an audio platform designed to deliver rich, rich sound and thus a much greater experience. The latest version of Dolby Mobile now also offers 5.1 channel surround sound support.

“We are delighted to be working with LG to showcase Dolby’s innovations for mobile phones on an Android smartphone. Dolby Mobile expands the possibilities of mobile entertainment and provides users with a rich cinema experience wherever they are. ” Said Ramzi Haidamus, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Dolby Laboratories.

The newsletter should be followed by a bit of subjectivity. It can probably be hard to come up with new developments in the world of phones, as 5.1 sound is just as much needed in a phone as a 12 MP camera. In fact, maybe not so much. Of course, this does not hurt LG, as we would be very surprised if this novelty did not appear in competing handsets soon.
