30 Hungarians are spying

According to an ESET survey, the number of Hungarian users who have already installed spyware on another computer is in the tens of thousands.

Men in love who are jealously researching their partner’s computer, employers who are curious about what their employees are doing during their working hours - among others, they are the ones trying to monitor others using some special software.

With the help of the NRC market researcher, ESET examined how many computer users in Hungary have direct experience with spyware. “The results surprised us too, we didn’t expect the number of people who have already installed spyware on their other computers to be over 30. Almost one hundred percent of them are men, with a higher proportion of 18-29 year olds, ”says Gergő Zoltán Kiss, ESET's virus expert. According to the results of the research, 3,6% of the 1 million Hungarian users who use the Internet at least once a week have already done so. In addition, 4% of respondents said they have an acquaintance they know has already installed spyware on another computer. The latter represents nearly 150 users, most of whom are likely to commit a crime by committing it.        

“The legal regulation of the use of spyware is not yet developed in the Hungarian legal system. At the same time, it is clear that anyone who monitors their computer activity without the prior consent of the data subject commits an unlawful act, ”says Anna Gönczi, a lawyer and legal representative at ESET. According to Gergő Zoltán Kiss, ESET's virus expert, it is important to know that the spyware in question is not the same as the malware written by criminals on the Internet, which is primarily used for data theft. "In most cases, these are commercially available, legitimate software that were originally designed to allow users to check if someone else's computer was being used by an unauthorized person," emphasizes ESET's anti-virus expert. the most important thing to know about these software, though, is that in general, the way they use them makes them illegal.
