The entry in question (image below) reveals that Intel will increase the number of processing units on the MSDT (mainstream desktop) line again next year. This means that in 2019, the successor to the Core i7-8700K, the 9th generation of the Core family (Ice Lake) will already have an 8-core structure, which will certainly be paired with 16 logical threads.

The step opens up the possibility of renewal for smaller solutions as well:

  • Core i5: 8/8 or 6/12 (core / logical thread)
  • Core i3: 6/6 or 4/8 (core / logical thread)

For our part, we feel the second option is more realistic, but it is also just speculation. Another addition: support for the Ice Lake series is possible with the 300 Series chipset (especially the Z390).
