Viral Samsung Digital Photo Frames

Amazon.com has warned of viral CDs for some Samsung photo frames. The problem has not just begun.

Amazon.com released an alert last week highlighting the virus infection of CDs included with some of Samsung’s digital photo frames. The briefing revealed that the Photo Frame Driver CD for SPF-85H devices purchased from an online retailer back in October also contained a program that Symantec had named a worm called W32.Sality.AE. The same pest was christened McAfee W32 / Sality, while Trend Micro christened it Troj_Agent.xoo. According to Symantec, the worm's most important task is to download and install additional malware on infected computers.

In the meantime, however, it turned out that the announcement made by Amazon.com is by no means due to a recent problem. Samsung had already issued a warning on November 28 reporting infected CDs. The company's announcement revealed that the CDs included with digital picture frames with the following type designation may be infected:

  • SPF-75H
  • SPF-76H
  • SPF-85H
  • SPF-85P
  • SPF-105P

Users should be especially careful if the serial number of their photo frame is structured as follows:

******* Q9 ***** - ******* QB *****
(example: MN08HVKQ900023, MN07HVJQA13191, CB10HVJQB01075)

 Viral Samsung Digital Photo Frames

It is not yet known whether a package containing an infected CD arrived in Hungary. For the time being, Samsung has not wanted to reveal details of what caused the infected CDs to hit the market. The company, on the other hand, published accurate information in order to avoid infections. The bottom line is that anyone with an infected CD should download the drivers and applications needed to operate the photo frame from Samsung's website, especially Frame Manager. If you already have the malware installed, you may want to scan your computer with antivirus software and update Samsung applications.
