The virus is spreading through Skype

Anti-virus development companies have become aware of a Trojan that is trying to infect computers through popular Skype services.

Virus writers are constantly looking for ways or technologies to infect as many computers as possible. Worms that spread through emails are already watched by a significant portion of users, and antivirus solutions also effectively protect systems from email malware. Therefore, some virus writers thought they were looking for new opportunities, and this time targeting the hugely popular Skype services.

Websense experts were the first to detect a Trojan specifically capable of spreading on Skype. The user first receives a message asking them to download a file named sp.exe using the link provided. If this happens and the program starts, the system will be infected immediately and a password-stealing application will be installed. The Trojan also makes changes that can be used to infect additional PCs via Skype.

Mikko Hypponen, a renowned expert at F-Secure, said they had already received a sample of his new trojan, but for now, there is no need to worry about a large-scale virus outbreak via Skype. However, Hypponen stressed that they are constantly monitoring the events related to the new Trojan program.

So far, SANS Internet Storm Center staff have only reported that they have heard of the emergence of the new malware, but in the absence of more detailed technical information, they did not want to reveal more about the malware.
