Ubuntu for Android

Ubuntu for Android

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu, has announced a version of Ubuntu running on Android phones. Ubuntu for Android provides users with a full-fledged desktop environment. To use the system, an external monitor and keyboard must be connected to the phone, which is not the same as the previously announced implementation called Ubuntu Phone.

Ubuntu for Android allows you to see the contacts and calendar entries stored on your phone directly, access your photos, and make and receive calls. The system allows you to simply connect your day-to-day phone to your monitor and keyboard in the evening and continue to use the same device as a full-fledged computer. By default, the program includes Chromium, Thunderbird, VLC, PiTiVi, Gwibber, as well as a music player and an image viewer.

Ubuntu for Android requires at least a dual-core 1 GHz processor, 2 GB of storage, OpenGL support, and 512 MB of memory, HDMI output, and Android 2.3 operating system. Some of the phones available today already meet these requirements, and more and more handsets are expected to be made in the future to meet these expectations.

The newly announced Ubuntu for Android is not yet available to users. Canonical is looking for manufacturers to work with Android devices that also run Ubuntu.
