Trend Micro: Virus protection for virtual systems

Trend Micro has announced an anti-virus product developed for virtual systems to protect VMware-based environments from malware.

The spread of virtualization is unbroken, while the development of fully compatible and interoperable security solutions is still in full swing. Yet there is a great need for adequate protection in the virtual world as well. "Just as virtualization radically changed IT, it also created new risks" Said Tom Miller, one of Trend Micro 's executives at Trend Micro Core Protection for Virtual Machines product announcement.

Virtualization technologies therefore pose new challenges for security professionals and devices. And traditional protection solutions are not always able to stand up completely. According to Trend Micro, most current security products start from standard (physical) systems, but this establishes weak points in protection. For example, they are unable to protect and control virtual machines that have just been shut down.

Trend Micro Core Protection for VMware antivirus is designed to provide ongoing protection for virtual machines running Windows operating systems running in VMware ESX, ESXi, or vSphere environments. Harish Agastya, Trend Micro’s director of product management, said Core antivirus runs on every virtualized system. The new application is actually based on Trend Micro's previously known anti-virus technologies, but the agent has become less resource-intensive in order to be able to filter out unwanted code in real time even under VMware.

Trend Micro Core Protection for VMware can also be managed from vCenter as well as the OfficeScan management console. The company also said that while it is serious about developing cloud-based antivirus models and services, it has no plans to make them available to virtual infrastructures for the time being. On the other hand, it is already building its solutions with steam power that will be used in Microsoft Hyper-V and Citix Xen-based environments.
