Download the first Raspbian-based SD card image

On the official blog of Raspberry Pi, Eben Upton announced the new Debian-based distribution.

The new version is intended to replace the previous Debian Squeeze image. The most important novelty is that the system is now able to take advantage of the Raspberry Pi's floating-point hardware, which can make browsing faster, but of course, there have also been a number of minor improvements. Those who have used the beta version of the recently released Debian Wheezy image may already experience fewer changes. Switching can still be beneficial, but the real progress can be felt after replacing Debian Squeeze.

 

Adam Armstrong let go of some measurements to find out the expected acceleration. The floating-point computing processing unit caused an average performance increase of 18 percent, but in glaring cases, there was also a 40 percent improvement.
