Sony: MPEG-2 even on Blu-Ray?

Sony has taken an interesting step, this time three, backwards.

Senior Vice President of Sony Pictures said: “More advanced formats do not necessarily mean more advanced picture quality. Our goal is the best image quality; and for now, we see a future with MPEG-2. ” MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) has developed the increasingly widespread MPEG-4 AVC, also known as H.264, which is one of the basic formats for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD (the lesser-known Microsoft VC-1 and even other codecs). This is a fraction of the file size of MPEG-2, and its picture quality is much better than any other codec with the right settings, be it DivX, XviD or MPEG-2 and generally a lower bit rate is enough to achieve the same picture quality.
