Mobile chargers could be unified in a few years

The new rule will be in place in the EU from 1 January, helping to spread standard mobile chargers.

Back in the summer of 2009, the microUSB connector was voted in the European Union as a standard mobile charger. Companies that have joined the initiative include Nokia, Apple, Samsung, LG, RIM, SonyEricsson, Motorola, Huawei, Alcatel, NEC, Emblaze, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Atmel.

Mobile chargers could be unified in a few years

Under the regulation, from 2011 January 1, affiliated companies will only be able to introduce and start selling devices in the EU that have a microUSB connector and are suitable for charging the battery. As major mobile manufacturers have joined the initiative, we can charge almost any phone with a charger in a few years, saving us a lot of annoyance. Although HTC’s name isn’t listed, there’s nothing to worry about, as the manufacturer’s newer models have already been able to be charged via the standard connector.
