Oracle and AMD will join forces

If AMD, then GPU, if GPU, then general-purpose use.

Phil Rogers, president of AMD’s HSA division, has announced the launch of “Project Sumatra”. The goal is to capitalize on the very respectable computing power of graphics processors not just during games, but in a Java program, for example. As a result, version 8 of the application on compatible systems will convert Java code to OpenCL and then run it on the GPU. This, of course, can lead to an increase in performance, but perhaps best of all, programmers don’t have to focus time and resources on implementing GPU acceleration, as Java does instead.

Unfortunately, Java 8 can only show its lion claws next year.
