NVIDIA GeForce GTX 400 analysis

Only 20-30% yield and less than 10 units delivered.

Professionals (also) envision an overcast image for NVIDIA. Analysts at Needham and Company have reported that GF100 chips have a production yield of roughly 20-30%. The Santa Clara company is therefore unable to meet the needs of users in the GeForce GTX 400 family of video cards. Due to production problems with the new series, 10 pieces have not yet been delivered to store shelves. For comparison, it is worth mentioning that the main rival ATi  recently crossed the 6 million mark. No significant change in this area is likely in the near future, as the release of the soon-to-be-launched Tesla 2000 models will take away additional capacity from TSMC. Needham’s analysis also covers the slippage in the emergence of Fermi-based products. Due to the half-year lag, they will realize declining profits and declining market share in the second half of 2010. Nevertheless, it is not worth drawing hasty conclusions. Recall that even during the FX series, several people had already buried NVIDIA, but the future did not justify them.
