Android is popular, but not perfectly secure

According to a recent survey, Android leads the Hungarian market for smartphone-based operating systems with an overwhelming advantage.Android-Happy2-e1357315066858 Google’s platform share is 65%, while Apple can only own 4%. Hungarian users are happy to avoid restrictions. A survey commissioned by AG Data found that almost half of the Hungarian internet population aged 18-75 currently has a smartphone.

The most popular are clearly Android devices, with 65 percent of users opting for this operating system, while Symbian 12, Windows Mobile 8, iOS 4, and Blackberry have only 2 percent.

However, in addition to the prevalence of each system, the antivirus company’s survey also looked at how safe we are using smartphones. This is becoming an increasingly important issue as the number of android pests increased fivefold in the second half of 2012 compared to the previous half. Today, we know hundreds of thousands of smartphone viruses, and Android vulnerabilities that allow criminals to remotely take control of devices are also being exposed.

According to the results of the current survey, a quarter of Hungarian users have already installed an application on their Android mobile phone that did not come from Google's official marketplace. In addition, respondents themselves admitted that one-third of such software was some kind of hacked or pirated version.

"If you want to use different external applications on an Android smartphone, you should install at least one basic, free antivirus software on the device," warns András Petrányi-Széll, Head of Communications at G Data. Among other things, the German company provides this to users through Google's marketplace. [G Data]
