MWC 2008: Cutting-Edge Mobile WiMAX Systems from Samsung

Samsung presented the latest Mobile WiMAX solutions, including the Access Service Network standard, at the MWC exhibition in Barcelona.

ASN standards include U-RAS Flexible and U-RAS Light Series 3, which deliver the network to previously uncovered areas within homes and buildings.
U-RAS Flexible covers short to medium range inside buildings. It includes RF and digital units that make installation, maintenance, and cost-effective creation of macro-sized networks much easier. The U-RAS Light Series 3 is an extremely small and lightweight central service unit that, while replacing WiMAX repeaters, provides greater capacity and integrated management for network systems and enhances their performance.

Within the ASN standard, Samsung will also introduce several devices such as a USB dongle, PC card, CPE, PDA, UMPC, PMP and laptop to provide a complete Mobile WiMAX portfolio to business operators.

With these Mobile WiMAX solutions, Samsung is showing how a simple transition between Alcatel Lucent GSM and Samsung Mobile WiMAX network is possible. For example, using Samsung’s dual-mode mobile device, users can experience seamless video playback while switching networks from Mobile WiMAX to GSM. This fact also increases the importance of Mobile WiMAX from a business point of view, especially in European markets where GSM technology significantly occupies mobile network systems.

Through the developments at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2008, Samsung will also introduce its next-generation Mobile WiMAX technology, OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access), which is capable of data rates of up to 1Gbps.
