Large memories for mobile phones

Samsung has developed a high-capacity memory that greatly simplifies the design of mobile phones.

Samsung Electronics today announced that it has developed a four-gigabyte MCP (multi-chip package) for mobile phones, which for the first time does not require an external memory card slot, and also eliminates the need to develop interface software for all NAND memory types.

Samsung's new moviMCP is a multi-chip package with an embedded (moviNAND ™) memory solution that provides an easy-to-design memory package that meets the high-speed data transfer needs of mobile phones while providing full support for various communication options within the phone.

“We have now perfected a memory chip that allows mobile phone manufacturers to significantly reduce development time while using an exceptionally robust design that delivers more performance than small phones with more storage capacity,” said Jim Elliott. Director of Flash Marketing, Samsung Semiconductor Inc.
The new moviMCP is a 4GB embedded memory card that is a combination of two 16 gigabit NAND flash chips and controllers, as well as a 1 Gb mobile DRAM chip (to support the processor) and a 2 Gb NAND flash chip. is responsible for supporting mobile phone operations. This provides a total of 35 Gb of memory capacity.

The eMMC interface used by Samsung - the MultiMediaCard Associaton standard for embedded memory - is a solution to the design complexity that has resulted from the functional differences between different types of NAND flashes by integrating a built-in controller into moviMCP. This eliminates the need to develop different interface software for all NAND flash types.

The new moviMCP builds a number of memory functions vertically on top of each other, which requires less floor space. However, the high density also eliminates the need for an external expansion slot.
Samsung's moviMCP is currently available as an EOM sample. However, according to market research firm iSuppli, the 3G mobile phone market, which is the main target of Samsung’s new moviMCP, is expected to reach 2007 million units by 392 and show an overall growth of around 2007 percent between 2010 and 40.
