The latest official Android statistics show that versions 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 are already present on 38,7% of all devices running Android.

Since all devices are put under one hat in the statistics, the results would be slightly different than this only considering mobile phones, but would not change in proportions. The data is based on measurements from the last two weeks and counts the devices that reach the Android Market, so the result is somewhat skewed against reality, but all in all, the current order is unlikely to change.

The end result is no surprise yet, FroYo remains the most popular version for now, but there will probably be a change of location soon and the gingerbread will take the top step of the imaginary podium. Currently, Android 2.2 has a market share of 45,3%. In second place is Gingerbread, which brings together the latest software, including all instruments on which systems between 2.3.3 and 2.3.7 play, their share, as I mentioned, was 38,7% until the period ending on 3 October. The aging 2.1 still provides internet access to 11,7% of devices, with its predecessor 1.5 and 1.6 almost dead by now, producing 1,1 and 1,4%.

The share of tablet-optimized systems is a very small slice of the now-growing Android cake. A total of 1,8% run these systems, which doesn’t mean on a straight line that this would be the share of tables using the system, as the most popular Galaxy TAB, among others, is running a mobile version. Anyway, 3.1 is the most used version, with 0,9% of the deductible, 3.0 with very little 0,2%, while the latest 3.2 runs on 0,7% of the machines.

android2What can we expect in the future? The system will undergo an interesting transformation over the next week, when version 4.0, called Ice Cream Sandwich, will be released. This will radically change the usability so far and merge the two main markets for the green robot, after which tablets and smartphones will be able to use that system. Exactly what the conditions for 4.0 are yet to be guessed is not certain to be a constraint either. Along with this will be the new Nexus, which will be the reference model for this version, which will be developed again by Samsung, the details so far [here] and [here] you can read.
