We calculated how long it takes for an electric scooter to pay off in Budapest

Here are the costs, you can choose to take a bus or a scooter.

While I lived in the city, I enjoyed using my bike for transportation. I got everywhere conveniently, quickly and at no other cost. True, I had to dress better in the cold, but in return I wasn’t tied to the schedule, I didn’t have to hang out with sweaty people at peak times, and in the summer, if I wanted to, I could stop on my way home for ice cream.

Public transport would be a good thing anyway, and let's not be unfair, there is some progress in Budapest, albeit slowly. There are new buses and trams, and I think the spinning is very well done. But there is an alternative, and not only the bicycle, but also the ever-increasing number of electric means of transport. Some of these are already so cheap that it is worth calculating how long it will take to recover the price and start to generate a "profit", that is, how much we save compared to BKV (BKK) prices.

I singled out for the task the Xiaomi electric scooter, the Youth Edition, which you read well, is already available for the price of a cheaper phone. This scooter, called the Youth Edition, can be ordered from China, and the price is actually as much as you can read in a table, meaning that by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page, you don't have to pay customs duties or VAT.

So let's see how the operation of the scooter comes out!

  • BKK Budapest season ticket price: 9500 HUF / month - 114 000 HUF / year
  • BKK ticket price: 350 HUF
  • Average electricity price: 35 HUF / kWh
  • Motor power: 250 watts
  • Roller range with one charge: 15-20 Km
  • Number of working days in 2018: 250

Let's count! For the sake of example, let our workplace be 10 kilometers away. It’s a pretty big distance within a city, but dare to be big! That means 20 kilometers a day. The maximum speed of the roller is 25 Km / h, but let’s be pessimistic, let’s say it is capable of a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, so we do it in about 1 hour. The consumption of the scooter is 0,25 kWh in one hour, which costs HUF 8,75. So we can say that the consumed electricity costs 8,75 forints a day.

Now we have the daily consumption, multiply that by the number of working days, and we get that we travel for 2187 forints for a year. The price of the roller is currently, if we can't find a coupon offer, it is 95 thousand forints.

What it means?

This means that the price of the scooter and the one-year electricity cost will be recouped in exactly 10,23 months. Of course, it is also true that the roller runs out of rubber, for example, sometimes it may not hurt to replace the brake pads, so we can say that based on all costs, the roller will bring back its price in 1 year, from then on we save almost 100 thousand forints? What kind of offer is this? Do you buy an electric scooter and go on vacation with the money saved? Franco.

Of course, to be fair, this scooter is the weaker type, which is not so suitable for ascents, for example. The larger version is also more expensive, consumes more, so its payback will be roughly a year and a half, and if you like the top super Xiaomi Ninebot Plus Electric with its 800-watt power, gyroscopic self-propelled, instead of shopping with home-carrying features, you can count on 2 years .
