New video cards for Macs

NVIDIA makes the Fermi-based professional card, while AMD makes the 5870 available to apple users.

NVIDIA a Quadro 4000 for Mac launches a new professional video card on the Mac front with its product called. The graphics processor of the Fermi-based card contains 256 CUDA cores, and the 2 GB of GDDR5 memory is connected to the GPU via a 256-bit wide bus, giving a memory bandwidth of 89,6 GB / s. Of course, the graphical APIs support DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.1, but they are only available on Windows operating systems (using BootCamp). On Mac OS X, only version 3.1 is supported on the OpenGL front, while FSAA only works in 8x mode here. The maximum power consumption under load is defined by the manufacturer as 142 watts.

The video outputs include a DVI and a DisplayPort and its cooling takes up only one card slot (Single-Slot). The NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for Mac will hit stores no later than December. The price tag includes no less than € 1000.

The other novelty concerns AMD's house, as the Radeon 5870 was officially available in the Apple Store in stand-alone form a few days ago, meaning it can be purchased separately. They require a Mac Pro with a PCI-Express 2.0 bus and a Mac OS X 10.6.4 (or later) operating system.

Equipped with 1GB of GDDR5 memory, the 5870 is now available from Apple’s Webstore for $ 450.
