Information on AMD's next-generation motherboard chipsets

Unlike the current trend, AMD's latest chipset, the RD790 and RS790, do not support DDR3 memories in any form.

The RD790 and RS790 support the next generation of AMD processors - Barcelona, Agena and Griffin - and 1066 MHz DDR2 modules, which can be a bit disappointing, but when you think about it, DDR3 memories are still in their infancy. due to the lack of products that support it, expected high prices, and initially lower speeds than DDR2, it will take months, or even more, a year for them to become widespread.

During the development phase Hummerhead Agena and Kuma core AMD processors can be inserted into the Socket AM2 + socket of the motherboard running under the code name. A real special feature is that we can find four full-featured PCI Express x16 slots on it, two of which meet the requirements of the PCI Express 2.0 standard, while the other two are PCIe 1.1 only. This will even allow for the deployment of Quad CrossFire systems, which the Radeon HD 2400, HD 2600 and HD 2900 Pro video cards, which will debut in the near future, are likely to already support.

The South Bridge will probably be the SB700, but unfortunately we don't have specific information about it, so you may even choose the SB600, in any case it will surely allow you to handle four SATA and one PATA connected devices. . In connection with the motherboard, it is worth mentioning the two gigabit network controllers and the 7.1 Realtek sound generating unit.

AMD Wahoo it is unlikely to be a mass product: two Socket F +, aka Socket 1207+ sockets can accommodate one Phenom FX processor each, which means that 2 × 4 cores will be responsible for performing computational tasks at the same time. As for the slots, there's no reason to be ashamed of the motherboard: two full-featured PCIe x16 2.0 and one PCIe x16 1.1, as well as a PCI Express x1 and a traditional PCI slot.

The motherboard, designed around the RS790 chipset, will conquer the lower category, with its integrated graphics processor hearing the age of course, DirectX 10. The RS790 is practically the successor to the 690G - formerly the RS690 - so it would not be at all surprising if its final type designation 790G would be.

From the picture, we can easily "read" that there is one PCI Express x16 - probably 1.1 -, two PCIe x1 and three PCI slots on the reference board.

As soon as we learn more technical details and distribution-related information about the above "boards", we promise that we will not hesitate to report on them.
