An effective procedure against illegal video uploads

NEC Corporation promises a quick solution for copyright holders to reduce illegal copies of their videos spreading online.

NEC announced it has developed a technology to help copyright owners find an illegally uploaded copy of their videos in seconds and send an alert email much earlier than before. The procedure involves making 76-byte impressions on video frames and comparing them to full or partial copies uploaded to the web. Based on the measurements, an average home PC can scan thousands of hours of material in just one second. The imprint must be very effective so that camera or analog copies can be detected. The procedure currently has a hit rate of 96 percent and the number of false hits is only five out of one million.

Using this technology can significantly reduce the time and money spent on manual content checks and increase hit accuracy. NEC will explore details of its technology at the Embedded System Expo next week and will publish the standard in September.
