As of March 24, one of the most popular torrent search sites, TorrentSpy.com, has been discontinued. The battle with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to the site’s operators. A two-year series of negotiations led to film lawyers in the U.S. demanding users ’data from them, but citing data protection, taking advantage of a legal loophole - they simply excluded U.S. users - the site’s operators denied. This decision drastically reduced traffic to the site and virtually led to its slow death, which was eventually shut down by the owners of the portal themselves.
