Iomega’s autumn plans for the portable hard drive market

The award-winning eGo portable hard drive series is expanded with USB 3.0 models.

Iomega plans to offer all 500GB and 1TB eGo portable hard drives with the new USB 3.0 interface by early October. The new hard drives, which are fully compatible with USB 2.0 machines, also incorporate Iomega's industry-leading Drop Guard Xtreme technology, which protects the device in the event of a two-meter drop, up to twice the industry average.

In the first quarter of 2011, the company plans to introduce USB 3.0 in all models of the Iomega Prestige Compact Portable Hard Drive product family. Soon after, Iomega will also incorporate the USB 3.0 interface into all other external hard drive models.

The 2,5-inch Iomega Portable Hard Drives, which conveniently fit in a notebook carrying case or pocket, are all host-powered, meaning you don't need a power supply other than the USB port on your desktop or laptop computer. The new USB 3.0 devices are fully backward compatible, meaning they work with any personal computer or other device with a USB 2.0 connection only. Iomega also offers USB 3.0 adapter cards (sold separately) that allow USB 2.0 desktop or notebook users to enjoy native transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second.
