Android runs on Gigabyte’s latest smartphone

The manufacturer, which is also popular in Hungary, expects Google's operating system to pick up its not-so-strong sales figures in the mobile phone segment.

Gigabyte devices are massively competitive in the face of increased market competition, relying on the Windows Mobile operating system, famous for its cumbersome manageability from the very beginning in the field of software. For a long time, the manufacturer, like its main competitors, saw the possibility of a breakthrough in creating a completely unique user interface, but the year 2010 seems to bring the loss of the old system and the rise of Android within the company. The first representative of the new trend is still known as GSmart Android Phone, and based on its specification, it is best to fight a serious battle with HTC Tattoo for the graces of customers.

The soul of the device is a 528 Mhz processor made by Qualcomm, which, even if it does not deceive the user with its raw power, is expected to run the Android system without major disruptions. In addition to the central unit, there will be 512 MB of ROM and 256 MB of RAM, but the available storage can be expanded later with a microSD card. The equipment also includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, as well as a GPS receiver, a 2-megapixel camera with autofocus and a 3,5 mm audio connector. Of course, a touch-sensitive display can be used as the primary input device, which with its size of 2,8 inches and QVGA resolution brings the minimum expected in the category.
The only serious downside to the device is the network connectivity, as the novelty is only compatible with GPRS and EDGE technologies. Although the lack of HSDPA could still be forgiven for the expected purchase price of only 210 euros (approximately 56 thousand forints), the abandonment of 3G will certainly deter many from buying.

We still have to wait for the official launch of the GSmart Android Phone, but after the device enters the market in February, it is likely that all the details that are now hidden will be revealed.
