Seagate is attacking with new hybrid hard drives

The renowned manufacturer is trying again to combine traditional and flash technology.

Seagate thought of trying to combine the key benefits of traditional hard drives and SSDs in one product. From the former technology, large storage space and capacity are used, while from the latter, very fast access times are used. Such a solution was presented in 2007, but it was far from successful. However, after 3 years, they decided to try again and this time wanted to achieve a much better price / performance ratio than the previous products, where this was probably the main reason for the failure.

Seagate is attacking with new hybrid hard drives

So the new hybrid hard drives come under the name Momentus XT with capacities of 250 GB, 320 GB and 500 GB. These start in the 2,5-inch class, meaning they are primarily intended for Notebook users. The plates spin at 7.200 per minute and have been given 32MB of cache, however, we also find 4GB of SLC-Nand-Flash memory on board. The product received a Sata II, i.e. 3 Gbps interface.

The price tag is expected to be around € 250 for the 96GB model, € 320 for the 105GB model and € 500 for the largest 128 model. Their official premiere will be on May 27th.
