Nokia and T-Mobile have successfully tested HSDPA

T-Mobile and Nokia have made HSDPA (High Speed Download Packet Access) calls using Nokia's 3G network technology. The test, which took place on T-Mobile's live network in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany, is the result of close collaboration between the two companies. Their goal is to make HSDPA available on commercial networks as well. The solution will be further tested by T-Mobile before the service launches commercially.

"HSDPA calls clearly illustrate T-Mobile's commitment to improving the quality of mobile broadband data services," said Hamid Akhavan, T-Mobile's CTO. "For example, the calls also serve to support the successful collaboration between T-Mobile and Nokia in the field of high-speed mobile access and broadband applications."

"Nokia is pleased to see that as a result of our cooperation with T-Mobile we were able to conduct successful HSDPA calls. The calls prove that the Nokia HSDPA solution is ready for service providers who want to take advantage of the potential of mobile data traffic," said Kari Sundbäck, vice president of Nokia Networks. "We continue to work closely with UK, Dutch and German T-Mobile to prepare their networks for the launch of commercial HSDPA."

Nokia's HSDPA solution is a software update for the WCDMA 3G network that provides significantly higher download speeds for the end user - in the first phase, a max. 3 MB / s - offers. Service providers upgrading their network with Nokia HSDPA can take advantage of higher data speeds and performance to increase the efficiency of their network and serve more customers at a lower cost per user. With Nokia HSDPA, service providers can offer more advanced services at significantly lower costs.

HSUPA (High Speed Upload with Packet Access), which provides higher upload speeds, will be available later. The upload speed of the Nokia system has already reached 384 kbps. Nokia has signed more than twenty HSDPA contracts to date, seven of which have been unveiled.
