Canon Europe, a leading imaging solutions company, has reported on the results of a study conducted by ICM that highlights the growing importance of data security. Pan-European research has found a serious lack of consumer confidence in data protection and highlights the potential negative effects of mandatory disclosure of data losses, as set out in the European Commission's legislative reform proposals. The study also emphasizes the importance of organizations taking appropriate precautions to avoid data loss. According to the survey, 76 percent of consumers would likely leave a company or service provider if some of their personal information leaked from it. The biggest concern is the leakage of credit card or bank data (48%).
Only 12 percent of consumers believe that organizations are doing enough to protect their personal information. However, when choosing a company or service provider, costs are still ranked higher (64%) than procedures guaranteeing the security of personal data (30%).
It also turned out that while they are worried about data loss, most people read only the most important parts of the security clause (36%), only 19 percent read all the security information they receive, while 13% of people do not read about security at all. laying part.

Quentyn Taylor, Director of Information Security at Canon Europe, said of the study:

“Research shows that consumer awareness of data protection is increasing. However, if the planned EU reforms are implemented and disclosure of data losses becomes mandatory, the number of reported data losses is likely to increase significantly; there is also a risk that consumers will become insensitive to what constitutes serious data loss. The high number of data loss reports can even mean that people get “tired” and no longer pay attention to these signals, which is at least as serious a problem as if there are no reports. It is now up to organizations to carry out risk assessments, highlight potential vulnerabilities and ensure the most appropriate preventive measures. ”

Nowadays, quite a few document-based cases occur among the priority data loss cases. According to a recent pan-European study by Quocirca, more than 70 percent of organizations have experienced security issues related to printed materials, yet only 42 percent place serious emphasis on security measures in this area. This is why this area is key if an organization is trying to minimize its vulnerability.
