Would DirectX 10 kill OpenGL?

The staff of The Inquirer sought the answer to the question of whether the gradual spread of DirectX 10 will really result in the "extinction" of OpenGL, with the help of readers.

The answer is clear NO! So let's see what the arguments are OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) are in favor of:

  • OpenGL Embedded Systems, or as many know it, the OpenGL ES graphical application programming interface, is widespread in the mobile phone, portable devices market, and is backed by renowned vendors such as NVIDIA, ATI, 3DLabs, Sun Microsystems, SGI, Intel and Texas Instruments, to name just a few.
  • John Carmack, the father of id Software, preferred OpenGL to FPS games over Direct3D in all cases, as OpenGL also allows you to create transcripts of these games that run on other OS.
  • Based on the above example, we can already mention one of the most important factors, according to which DirectX 10 will never be under Linux or Mac OS X, so in the case of these operating systems, OpenGL is an essential accessory for programmers and graphics.
  • Widespread and hugely popular design and drawing programs like Maya, AutoCAD, Cinema4D, or even 3D Studio Max all use OpenGL for graphical display.
  • Last but not least, we can mention several OpenGL games that also contributed to "keeping the API alive". These include Doom 3, World of Warcraft or Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, which is still under development.
