67 GB Blu-ray discs on the horizon

Although many are already burying Blu-ray, manufacturers are still able to create new ones for the discs.

On Friday, Sony and Panasonic announced a new technology called i-MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Estimation Sequence) that could increase the amount of data stored on a single layer from the current 25 to 33,4 GB, making dual-layer disk capacity just doesn’t increase to 67GB. According to the developers, it is not necessary to develop a new laser or new settings to read new discs, the solution will also be available through software.

Thus, the new technology does not increase the number of layers, but achieves results by using better optical quality discs. Developers, of course, want the process to become part of the Blu-ray standard as soon as possible.
