2,5 TB Seagate hard drives for 2009

In two years, Seagate would double the current maximum data density of hard drives, which could produce hard drives up to 2,5 TB in size.

The hard disk manufacturer presented its highest data density at the IDEMA DISKON exhibition in California, which means 421 gigabits of data per 1 square inch. By way of comparison, their most recently commercialized hard drive with the highest data density, the 160 gigabyte 5400.3 intended for laptops, has "only" 135 gigabytes of data per square inch. Only Toshiba achieved a higher result, they managed to increase this value to 188 Gbit for portable hard drives.

Seagate said in a recent press release that with this 421 Gigabit data density, they can achieve storage capacity of 1,8 GB for 275-inch hard drives, 2,5 GB for 500-inch hard drives, and 3,5 TB for 2,5-inch hard drives. This means tripling the data density of the most commercially available and most manufactured hard drives.

Seagate is not alone in the competition, Hitachi intends to introduce holographic drives with a capacity of 1 TB later this year. Good luck to both of you!
