Movies from the Air!

One of the achievements of the last years, maybe a decade, was the playback of multimedia content in better and better quality as a sign of the rapid development and strengthening of hardware in computer technology and multimedia. I mentioned it in an older article, but I won’t stop to do it again to share an old memory with you.

Sometime when the CD that came with the newspapers was still a curiosity, and when the editors weren’t able to stuff a 650-mega disc yet, well, it was then that I came across an appendix to an article in a Chip magazine supplement. The writing in the newspaper discussed the various compression methods we could use for films. And the attachment on the disc was nothing more than movie clips compressed in different ways. These details came from the first part of Toy Story, and Buzz Lightyear printed the rice in them.

Well, you rightly ask, what makes this so much numbness? For those who weren’t skinning a PC at the time, I’ll have a hard time explaining that these were indeed the first real movies I saw on a computer screen. The image on the VGA resolution monitor was only stamp-sized, yet I still feel it, the memory is vivid in me as we stared at the frames with my brother-in-law's eyes and philosophized that one day the time will come when complete video clips, not God, we'll be able to watch full-night movies on your computer. At the time, we didn’t even dream that it could even run in full screen, and certainly not that its resolution could be 1920 x 1080 pixels. How could we have dreamed of this when even a 640 x 480 monitor was a miracle, at least in the sense that it was not only able to display shades of gray or green, but we could see the triple version of Windows in COLOR. Why did I describe this? Because for me, the years since then have run away at lightning speed, and if I look around today, I can see that what’s not full HD isn’t good anymore, in fact, slowly what won’t be three-dimensional won’t be good enough either.
