Wanbo T2 Ultra – When flexibility meets quality

The world of home entertainment is constantly evolving, and Wanbo's latest projector, the T2 Ultra, could be a milestone in this evolution. This compact device combines everything we expect from a modern projector: Full HD resolution, smart features and an innovative 120-degree adjustable stand, which opens up completely new possibilities in projection.

The evolution of projectors has undergone significant changes in recent years. From the initial, simple projectors, they have now become complex entertainment centers that not only project images, but also offer full-fledged smart TV functionality. Wanbo, which has made a name for itself in the market of affordable but quality projectors, now presents a device that is especially suitable for those looking for a flexible solution for home cinema.

One of the most important innovations of the Wanbo T2 Ultra is the built-in stand, which allows you to project the image even onto the ceiling. This feature can be especially useful in a bedroom, for example, where you want to watch a movie while lying down, or in situations where traditional eye-level projection is not possible.

The device's 500 ANSI lumens brightness and Full HD native resolution provide adequate image quality for both movies and presentations. The official Android TV 11 operating system and Netflix certification guarantee that streaming services can be used with full functionality.

Wanbo T2 Ultra is not just a simple projector, but a complete home entertainment center. The built-in sound system has two 5-watt speakers and a subwoofer, which provides a sound experience worthy of the projected image. Automatic image adjustment functions - such as autofocus and keystone correction - ensure that the user does not have to constantly fiddle with settings.

The positioning of the device is clear: it is aimed at those who want a versatile projector with modern features, but do not want to spend a fortune on it. At a price point of around $200, the T2 Ultra offers features that were previously only available in much more expensive devices.

The Wanbo T2 Ultra is practical in every way

The Wanbo T2 Ultra boasts compact dimensions: its width is only 145 mm, its depth is 142 mm, and its height is 219 mm. This size makes it ideal for portable use, which is also supported by its 1,5 kilogram weight. The appearance of the device reflects a clean, modern design, with the dominant color being white.

The most striking feature of the projector is its unique, built-in stand system that can be adjusted through a 120-degree range. This innovative solution allows you to point the projected image practically anywhere, even towards the ceiling. The stand has a standard tripod thread at the bottom, so the projector can also be attached to a conventional camera tripod.

The dust-free, sealed optical unit with the projection lens is located on the front of the device, and below it is the sensor responsible for autofocus and image correction. The speaker grilles are located on both sides of the housing, and the ventilation slots and an extra woofer diaphragm are located on the back.

The connectors are located on the back of the device. Here you'll find an HDMI 1.4 input for connecting external sources, a USB 2.0 port for media playback, and a 3,5mm jack for external audio devices. The power connector and a small reset button are also located here.

The device has a minimal number of controls, with only a single power button on the top. This is a conscious design decision, as the primary means of control is a remote control that works over both Bluetooth and infrared, and also has shortcut buttons for direct access to Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and Disney+.

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 8

The special feature of the remote control is that it is also equipped with a built-in microphone, which allows you to use the Google Assistant. The button layout is well thought out, the most frequently used functions are easily accessible, and the control does not require a direct line of sight to the device thanks to the Bluetooth connection.

Communication options are provided by dual-band (2,4 GHz and 5 GHz) WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0, so there is no shortage of wireless connectivity options.

Wanbo T2 Ultra=Smart compromises for an affordable price

The heart of the Wanbo T2 Ultra is an Amlogic T950D4 processor, which contains four ARM-A35 cores clocked at 1,8 GHz. Graphics tasks are handled by a Mali-G31 MP2 GPU. The system has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, which is somewhat more modest than what we are used to from today's smart devices, but it is perfectly sufficient for using projection functions and basic streaming services and 1080p resolution.

The projection technology is LCD-based, the native resolution of the device is 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD). The brightness is 500 ANSI lumens, which is considered a good value in the category, and is coupled with a contrast ratio of 2500:1. The LED light source has a lifespan of over 20 hours, which can mean up to 000-15 years of operation with average use.

In terms of projection parameters, the T2 Ultra can produce a screen size between 45 and 140 inches. The ideal projection distance is between 1,2 and 3,8 meters, and the projection ratio is 1,2:1. The device supports the HDR10 standard, which can be especially useful for streaming content.

The device comes with the official Android TV 11 operating system and is Widevine L1 certified, which allows you to play Full HD content from streaming services. The Google Play store is fully functional, allowing you to install more than 5000 Android TV compatible applications on the device.

The sound system consists of two 5-watt speakers, supplemented by a passive subwoofer. According to the manufacturer, the noise level does not exceed 30 dB, which is a particularly good value for a projector. The device supports Dolby and DTS audio formats, although these can only be played in stereo or 5.1 transcoding.

Communication options include dual-band (2,4 GHz and 5 GHz) WiFi, capable of speeds up to 400 Mbps, and Bluetooth 5.0 technology. The device supports Chromecast, so you can easily mirror the screen from compatible devices.

The ASA 3.0 algorithm is responsible for automatic image correction functions, including autofocus, keystone correction (up to 30 degrees), obstacle detection and screen alignment. The digital zoom function can be adjusted from 50-100%, and there are four different projection modes to choose from: front, rear, and ceiling front and rear.

Wanbo T2 Ultra Software Capabilities: More than a Simple Projector

The Wanbo T2 Ultra comes with the official Google TV 11 system, which is the version of Android optimized by Google for smart TVs. The user interface is the same as what you would find on a Chromecast with Google TV device: clear, logically structured and available in Hungarian, although there may be some strange translations.

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 14

The heart of the system is the Google Play store, from where we can directly install applications from popular streaming services. Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, SkyShowtime and other services all work natively on the projector, in Full HD resolution and with 5.1 sound. If an application is not available in the Play store, we can bypass this limitation by installing the alternative application store Aptoide (I didn't say this, I don't even know how this text got here).

The projection settings are available in a separate menu, which can be easily accessed using the dedicated button on the remote control. Here, you can set or fine-tune autofocus, geometric correction (which can be done automatically or manually by entering four points), obstacle detection, and screen scaling. The picture settings include various predefined picture modes, color temperature settings, and the ability to manually adjust contrast, sharpness, and saturation.

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 15

Thanks to Google Assistant integration, you can also control the device with voice commands. By speaking into the remote control microphone, you can search for content, launch apps, or even control smart home devices. With the Chromecast function, you can mirror the screen from both Android and iOS devices or send media content directly to the projector.

In the sound settings menu, we can choose from different sound profiles and we can also adjust the equalizer manually. The device also supports Bluetooth audio, so we can connect wireless headphones or speakers to it.

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 16

The system is special in that it supports the DLNA protocol, so you can play content from a network media server using the BlubblePnP application. In addition, Plex and Kodi media centers can be installed, giving you virtually unlimited media playback options.

Wanbo T2 Ultra in practice – user experiences

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 17

Let's start with the picture! Based on my experience, the Wanbo T2 Ultra is ideal for use primarily in a home environment, in a properly darkened room. The device's 500 ANSI lumens brightness is not outstanding, but if there is no other solution, the projector can still be used in a moderately bright environment, although in this case the result is naturally better for content with a bright background, while it is worse for dark scenes.

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 18

In terms of projection capabilities, the device produced a smooth, usable image during testing. The 45-140 inch projection range in practice means that we can project from a distance of 1,2-3,8 meters, which is ideal for average-sized living rooms. Needless to say, the projector placed on the floor in the bedroom produces a slightly wider image than a 180-inch bed, so it is comfortable to watch.

I would definitely not like to hide the fact that with proper color settings and white balance, you will not get 500 ANSI lumens, I would guess about a hundred less per eye. Due to the brightness reduction, the contrast will also be weaker than the factory value, I say this without a device, relying on my eyes. At the same time, the color settings are important, and unless it is primary to be able to use it in semi-bright environments, it is worth changing the colors to their place instead of the brightness loss.

It should also be noted that at maximum image size, some quality degradation is already noticeable, so a projection distance of around 3 meters is considered optimal, which will achieve a screen diagonal of around 90 inches. I usually project a 100-inch image, and that wasn't bad at all.

As with all LCD projectors, image sharpness declines at the corners. This decreases (almost to zero) when you project from the center and increases the further the projection direction deviates from 90 degrees (horizontally and vertically).

The automatic image adjustment functions have mixed reviews. The autofocus adjusts focus in about 5 seconds, while keystone correction can take up to 10 seconds. The system is only activated automatically in the event of a significant change in position - for smaller tilts of a few degrees, the correction must be initiated manually.

It is important that we also get screen adjustment. This works properly if we use a light screen with a dark (black) border. In this case, the image adjusts almost perfectly to the size of the screen, and very minimal readjustment may be required. Overall, it can be said that the focus adjustment was flawless for me. However, the keystone adjustment almost always required a little refinement. Not much, if I hadn't bothered with it, the cinema vision would have been good, but if there is a manual adjustment, I took advantage of the opportunity.

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 21

What finally worked well was the obstacle avoidance. This means that if you project onto a wall with something on it, say a clock hanging on the wall, the projector will reduce the image to a location and size that will not include the obstacle in the projected image. This is a nice feature, but unfortunately it only exists on paper with a lot of projectors. Not like the Wanbo T2 Ultra, where it actually works!

The sound system pleasantly surprised me. The combination of two 5-watt speakers and a passive subwoofer produces a convincing, if not “cinematic” sound, and it performs especially well in reproducing lower sounds. The maximum volume is not outstanding (in fact, I would say modest), but it is quite sufficient for average-sized rooms. I definitely dare to say that in its category, especially considering the size of the housing, the sound quality of the Wanbo T2 Ultra is outstanding.

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 22

I did have a small problem with the noise level of the device, however. Although the manufacturer promises a value of less than 30 dB, according to my measurements, 40 is more like 30, or 40 is the new thirty. This is not outrageously high, but it is higher than what the manufacturer promises, so the steady hum of the fan remains audible, especially during quieter scenes. However, from a normal viewing distance, it is already approaching the value promised by the manufacturer. I must add here that the device will definitely not be suitable for watching movies in the bedroom at night, because if you turn down the volume so that the family is not disturbed by the sound, the sound of the fan will also become audible.

The software performance proved to be somewhat limited due to the 1 GB RAM and 8 GB storage. Menu navigation is a bit slow at times, but streaming apps and media playback work absolutely smoothly! During the tests, the wifi connection produced a stable speed of around 120 Mbps, which is more than enough for Full HD streaming content.

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 23

Streaming service tests yielded positive results: Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, HBO Max and other platforms all work with full functionality and in Full HD resolution. The Chromecast function also performs reliably, and screen mirroring from both Android and iOS devices is smooth.

Wanbo T2 Ultra: the review

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 24

The positioning of the Wanbo T2 Ultra is clear: a projector that tries to offer smart TV functionality and modern projection solutions in the affordable category. At a price point of around $200, the device offers many features that were previously only available in the more expensive segment.

I called the Wanbo T2 Ultra a mini Mozart1, because it's like a slightly smaller, slightly dumber version of Wanbo's top projector. Both have Android TV, both have FHD resolution, both have subwoofers. But the picture is a little less vivid, the brightness is lower, and the sound is not as punchy (let's say quieter) as its bigger sibling. But let's not forget, the T2 Ultra offers these features for a much cheaper price!

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 25

The projector's biggest strengths include its innovative 120-degree adjustable stand, full Google TV system with streaming service support, and automatic image adjustment features. The image quality is more than adequate for its category, and the 500 (I think it's more like ~400) ANSI lumens brightness is sufficient for most home uses, although usability is severely limited in bright ambient light.

Once you get the colors right, you'll get a dazzling experience, you'll see image quality that's well above average, and the projected image size will give you an absolute cinematic effect.

The compromises are primarily in hardware performance: 1 GB RAM and 8 GB storage are the minimum that an Android TV system still accepts, and this is reflected in the speed of menu navigation. The fan noise, although not blatant, its constant presence can sometimes be distracting during quieter movie scenes.

We tested: Wanbo T2 Ultra - Netflix-capable gimbal projector at a good price 26

Overall, the Wanbo T2 Ultra is a very, very good entry-level smart projector, which can be a good choice primarily for those who want a versatile device equipped with modern features at an affordable price. Considering the price-performance ratio, the device seems to be one of, if not the best choice in its category, especially when we consider the official Google TV system and full support for streaming services.
