Introductory

I’ve been thinking about the solution for a while now, looking at different products in Chinese stores because it couldn’t go any further to stumble on the sidewalk next to the house in the dark. Then a month ago I was faced with an action in which I was able to buy three solar lamps for the price of two. I liked the shape, but in the end I decided to spend a little more looking for a higher brightness, so I chose the Utorch solution, which also offers more in terms of capability than the basic version.

Exterior and packaging

On the simple unpainted box we can see the drawing of the lamp, there are some important data, such as that it has IP68 protection against water, that the luminaire is 10 watts, and also that it can illuminate 3-5 meters. However, as you will see from the description, the more essential skills are missing, even though there are quite a few inside.

In the box, besides the lamp, we find a description, in this the closest to me was the English guide, but if someone bites German, Italian, Spanish or French better, they will not be disappointed either. There is, of course, text written in Chinese, but that is perhaps what they speak the least at home. In addition to the description and the lamp, there is also a simple remote control, which is an advance that we have not just bought a simple luminaire. There’s even a good long two-wire cable, but I’ll only write about the role of this later. The rest is a small bag, in which we get four dowels and four screws for mounting.

The lamp, inverted to the back, i.e. to the part that can be screwed to the wall, forms a saddle roof with LEDs around it on one side and a full-surface solar panel that charges the battery instead of the other one.

The body of the lamp can be slid in the middle, but I will describe the significance of this in operation. As I wrote above, we get four screws to it, meaning we can attach it to the wall at four points. In my opinion, one screw at the bottom and one at the top would be enough, because the lamp weighs only 30 grams, but the more are never bad, so don’t have too many screws, which is why we don’t buy it.

Inverting the structure, we find two depressions on the back panel. In one, the connector that connects the solar panels to the LED section, in the other, a USB connector and a six-position switch await us. The latter also shows what will be described in the next paragraph.

The cover is made of strong materials that are well assembled for grip and feel, of course we only get an answer to how much UV radiation eats up after years. At first it looks good, strong, easy to use, so the equipment can come!

Operation

First, think about what to expect from such a lamp to see what we get compared to it! The first, of course, is brightness. Be strong enough to illuminate the selected area. Then, if it is possible to have some light sensor on it so that it does not light up unnecessarily during the day, the battery should be charged anyway. The third thing, but already considered extra, is that you may eat motion detection so that it can only light up in the dark when it is needed. That's about it. If you know these with a solar powered LED outdoor lamp we can already be satisfied!

What does the Utorch YY030 know about this? Surprisingly much! Being able to meet the above requirements is almost basic, but beyond that we also get interesting skills. Let’s start there, the luminaire contains no less than 88 LEDs. This is already encouraging data in terms of brightness. According to the manufacturer, the lifespan is more than 25 thousand hours. If we count a little, it turns out that it means almost three years of continuous operation, but since the lamp has a good chance that it will only switch in the dark and only in motion, the lifespan can be safely considered lifelong.

As I wrote, we also find a switch on the butt of the lamp, which assumes that we can choose from several modes. For the Utorch YY030, you can set up exactly five different modes.

  1. The simplest solution, the sun goes down, it gets dark and the lamp turns on.
  2. One more complicated, it gets dark, movement occurs near the lamp, the lamp turns on.
  3. It's even more complicated. The lamp is constantly lit, but at low brightness, but when motion is detected, it switches to full brightness.
  4. Extra mode. The lamp only works in the dark, but it is turned on not by motion but by sound. The minimum volume is 50 decibels, which can be a clap, for example.
  5. The lamp is not interested in whether it is dark or light, whether something is moving around it or whether we are applauding it, one thing is only interested in whether we turn it on with the remote control or not.

You can see that the structure of Utorch is really not low-cost. It is capable of extra modes that you would not expect from a simple and especially very cheap lamp.

I wrote above that the bottom and top can be disassembled. This is useful if you want to place the solar panels elsewhere and the luminaire elsewhere. For example, if the lamp goes into a cellar passage where there is not enough light and the battery is not charged, we can place the solar panel farther away on a sunny wall. Or we can make the lamp in the apartment, say in the hallway, lit, but the solar panel goes outside where there is a lot of light. For this we get the long cable also mentioned above. This allows us to connect the separated lower and upper parts.

Experiences

Needless to say, I don’t have years of experience, so I can only feed on the last few days. The lamp is easy to install. For me, it was a perfectly good solution to keep the two parts together, so it made my job easier. I chose number three as the operating mode.

Before mounting, it is advisable to charge the lamp via USB. Be careful, because the connector is quite passive, the space is small, I also managed to tear the buckle out of its place at one of the lamps, so I won't charge it any more with a cable. Another black dot, though not a big dot, is that one LED on one of the lights is not working. In terms of brightness, do not divide, do not multiply, I hope the other LEDs will not die.

The brightness is perfect enough for me, I put it over a sidewalk, roughly 50-60 inches, perfect. Although I consider the given 5 meters to be slightly excessive, its light is really satisfactory within 3 meters.

Conclusion

Utorch YY030 8

I think I can be satisfied in every way. In terms of quality and light, I also got what I wanted, and even a little more, because I suspect I won’t take out the remote in stinky life anymore. Of course, this is not such a big deal. What I regret a bit is that the mode selector switch has been pushed to a location where it can only be reached by removing the lamp. Yet, if it weren’t so easy, I might sometimes switch to remote control mode so that I could switch to constant mode for a while, or from afar, understand I could turn it off from the house when I no longer needed the light. That is to say in winter, if it is cold it would be very good.

So there is still room for improvement, but overall I am satisfied. If they will work for a long time, the roughly 13 thousand forints issued for the three pieces seem like a good price!
