Ulefone Armor X7 Pro - Introduction

Strap phones are becoming more and more popular. This is no wonder, as we are all terrified of breaking our cell phones, and this is especially true for those who do physical work or do extreme sports.

The Ulefone Armor series is perhaps the best of the Chinese phones. For a long time, the company was only in the middle category, but about a year and a half ago they decided to break into the entry level with their shatterproof mobiles.

In practice, this means that in terms of durability, they produce just as good and strong devices as the bigger siblings, but the hardware is weaker, so we can get a military-certified mobile at an almost ridiculous price.

The Ulefone Armor X7 Pro is one such phone. You can hit, cut, submerge, water with high-pressure water, or, if you feel like it, use it for underwater photography.

Hardware

Processor, memory, storage, display

As with all phone tests, we open with the hardware. As it turned out from the introduction, this phone is not about muscles, however, anyone who invests a few tens of thousands of forints will not have a complaint about it.

The central unit is the Helio A20, which, although it has only four cores and a 1,8 GHz clock, is said to be a distinctly modern chip.

In this case, therefore, the four cores do not mean that an old, already discounted proci has been put into the phone, the manufacturer, MediaTek, has targeted the entry level with it. So in many abilities, it competes with any high-end tile.

What does this mean in practice? The chip is already 64-bit, has a 550 MHz graphics accelerator, supports HD + displays, LPDDR4 memories, US, Russian and European (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo) positioning systems. The ac standard, i.e. Wi-Fi 5, dual-channel wireless network access and Bluetooth 5.0.

Although I did a speed measurement on it, these numbers are not very relevant right now. The mobile is not designed to run games, so in general it can be said that in all tests (Antutu, 3D Mark, PC Mark) it brought half the score of strong, mid-range Snapdragon processors (Snapdragon 732G, Snapdragon 730G).

In practice, this means that newer games won’t run properly on it, but the power of the central unit is plenty enough to run our everyday software, and of course the Android 10 installed on the phone, smoothly.

A modern Android phone today will need enough memory and we will need enough storage to use it smoothly. There is no shortage of these either. The system memory has a capacity of 4 GB and the storage can be expanded with a memory card of 32 GB, the latter can be loaded up to 256 GB.

Most rugged phones have a smaller display than today’s average. There are several reasons for this. One is that, as I wrote above, they are not designed for multimedia or gaming use, so there is no need for a ping pong racket sized panel. The other is that the smaller display will be harder to break.

Well, the X7 Pro's display is only 5 inches, but at the same time, the phone is barely an inch shorter than my own Xiaomi Mi Note 10, which of course is due to the large, impact-resistant cover. The resolution of the IPS panel is HD +, ie 720 x 1280 pixels.

More important than the resolution, the backlighting of the panel is pretty good, so the device stays usable even in sunlight.

Kamerák

Well, since this is a work phone, we don’t have to fiddle with the presentation of the cameras much, as we only find two pieces.

The front self-timer camera is 5, while the back main camera is 13 megapixels. There is no depth sensor, but this is not a problem in this category, most phones available at similar prices are just ornaments, so we won’t even feel the lack of it.

I have already mentioned underwater photography on the phone. This is common in the Armor series. All you need to know is that the other features of your phone cannot be used in this case, so the touch sensitivity of the phone's display is turned off. Photos can be taken by pressing physical buttons.

The resulting images are of usable quality, but of course they don’t compete with today’s top mobiles. You can see for yourself by clicking on the photos below.

Video capability is one thing worse than images, I say this is only worth using if there is no other solution.

Other skills

I have already spoken up some of them, but I will now summarize.

So Wi-Fi is dual-channel, ac standard. With Bluetooth 5.0, we get support for 3 satellite navigation systems. The phone has an FM radio, and more importantly, we also get NFC, so we can also replace the credit card with it if our bank also supports the option.

We have a headphone jack, we get a stack of sensors, and we have a notification LED as well. The battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh, which, knowing the very economical central unit of the phone, can store enough electrons for a minimum of 2 days of use under normal use.

Other capabilities include the front-facing button on the left, for which you can “program” any function. Not one, three right away! You can set what the phone does with one click, double click, or press and hold. You can set up an emergency call, flashlight, underwater photography, sound recording, or whatever you like.

The phone is powered by Android version 10, the last security update is April. The software, of course, speaks Hungarian. The manufacturer has installed some programs on it, but this is an advantage, not a disadvantage, as the software can be found in each of the Armor series and is a useful app that takes advantage of the phone's capabilities.

We get things like protractor, compass, brightness measurement, spirit level, vertical adjustment, So these are better if they are there on the device.

Durability

It’s important to have strong hardware in an impact-resistant cell phone, but perhaps more importantly, to be able to withstand all kinds of physical impact as much as possible. Members of the Ulefone Armor family, including the Armor X7 Pro, are also at the forefront in this regard. Their water and dust resistance, the ratings obtained go far beyond the usual IP68 rating, they meet conditions that are sufficient for military use as well.

In order to understand exactly which standard means what protection, I tried to summarize the point!

After the IP marking, the first number is for protection against dust and the second for protection against water, and the marking K is for a special, enhanced protection against water, which is only available for devices with IP69 protection only.

Dust protection is described by a six-point scale, where 6 is the peak, ie total dust protection

The scale of protection against water is 9 divisions, by definition the ninth is the best. This specifically means that IP69 mobiles are able to stay functional at a depth of 1-3 meters for a minimum of 30 minutes, but for some phones, such as the Armor X7 Pro, the manufacturer can specify even better values. In our case, this means two hours of operation at a depth of two meters and 24 hours of operation at a depth of one meter.

The K mark means additional protection against water, precisely that the phone must also withstand high-pressure water. This is numerically 14-16 liters per minute of 80-degree water from a distance of 10-15 centimeters at 30 bar cycles in 100-second cycles.

However, these conformations are nothing compared to the resistance required by the MIL-STD-810 military requirement. The device must be able to withstand extremely low and extremely high pressures, very high and very low temperatures, solar radiation, prolonged rain, salt, fog, sand and dust, rapid diving, high acceleration, vibration, icing and the ballistic blow as well.

Tests of the Ulefone Armor X7 Pro included the low pressure test, in which the device remained operational for 57 hours at a pressure of 25 kPa and a temperature of 4 degrees.

An acid atmosphere test was also performed, in which the mobile was sprayed with a pH of 35 at 4,17 degrees, so an acidic liquid was sprayed. The phone remained operational for two hours and the data storage was not damaged for another 22 hours.

Testing in a humid environment was performed in an environment between 23 and 60 degrees, while humidity ranged from 50 to 90 percent. The Armor X7 Pro lasts 6-8 hours in such an extreme environment.

According to the standard, the phone must also be able to withstand direct sunlight. During the test, the phone received 49 W / m1120 of radiation energy at an outside temperature of 2 degrees and remained operational under these conditions for nearly 20 hours.

According to the military standard, impact resistance must also be good. Quantitatively, this means that the device must withstand when dropped from a height of 1,2 meters onto concrete, for softer floors such as wood, 2 meters is the expected height.

As you can see, the endurance court also has degrees, but the Armor 6E offers something quite special in this regard, in every environment, it has to have and can have all kinds of physical effects.

Use

The Armor X7 Pro only served as my primary device for 2 days, during which time I tried to try everything on it. Phone calls, navigation, a little browsing, Facebook, so what most of us use is a phone.

In the time that has elapsed, I have not discovered anything worth mentioning, neither pro nor cons. That is, the X7 Pro did its job the way it should. The speakers are strong enough, the microphone also worked well, the navigation was accurate, so I really can’t report anything interesting.

As a test, I threw it a few times, dropped it about a meter on grass and concrete, and soaked it in water for two hours. There were no scratches on it, and the result of the toss is not visible on the cover.

Sorry, I can't write more than this, I'm a terrible boring phone, everything works on it. 😊

Summary

There are both exciting and boring tests in a tester’s life. This one now fell into the latter category. In any case, it is amazing that you can buy such phones for just 30 thousand forints, ones that are good for speed and easy to break.

A few years ago, manufacturers packed a heavy price tag for hard phones because of the hardness. Nowadays, this is a barely perceptible extra expense compared to normal mobiles.

On the other hand, and this is very gratifying, instead of IP68, compliance with the military standard IP69K and even the MIL-810G is almost a basic requirement. When the latter first appeared, it was still a real specialty, an extra, but nowadays, as you can see, we also get it at the entry level.
