The HD-DVD format has barely been introduced, we can already welcome a record holder in the standard camp supported by the DVD-Forum.

Toshiba’s witch kitchen has once again come out with a world first in the form of a desktop HD-DVD recorder. We don’t have too much information about the product yet, which can be the first surprise, the 1 terabyte (!) Internal storage capacity that allows us to store 130 hours of HD or 1788 hours of DVD quality video in MPEG-2 (-TS) format. Of course, you can also record to HD DVD-ROM, in which case you can expect a tight two-hour recording time.

The RD-A1 has a 14 bit / 297 MHz videoDAC, is compatible with Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and DLNA standards, and has HDMI and USB connectivity. The machine weighs 15 pounds and has a respectable size - which is not at all useless, as an Intel Pentium 4 system is probably lurking in its stomach - and is expected to cost around € 2750 in Europe (around € 750).
