Intel is working to develop new technologies that will mitigate the damage caused by laptop theft.
The massive damage caused by the loss or theft of laptops over the past few years has proven to be a very critical area from a security point of view: in December 2006, for example, a lost trace of a Boeing notebook containing 382 personal data. As a result, names, addresses, social security numbers, etc. were placed in large quantities in unauthorized hands.
Many hardware and software development companies are increasingly working to develop technologies to prevent laptop theft. These include Intel, Lenovo Group, McAfee, Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Phoenix Technologies, among others. Intel recently announced that it will introduce solutions in the fourth quarter of this year that will provide greater security for laptops.
Dadi Perlmutter, one of Intel's vice-presidents, spoke quite succinctly about "anti-theft" technologies. For now, all that can be known for sure is that they will be part of Intel Active Management Technology, and we will meet them in the case of Centrino vPro solutions. According to Intel's promise, the new procedures will be able to block portable computers that fall into unauthorized hands — both at the processor and hard drive level — and thereby prevent the unauthorized acquisition of stored data.
