Introductory

If you have an action camera, then GoPro. This name is known to everyone, yet relatively few have one. The reason for this is the price. GoPro cameras are good, but they haven’t been outstandingly good for years. They are slowly merging into the field, and today Chinese competition has taken over the market from them. It’s no coincidence that the company is essentially bankrupt. The reason for this can also be traced back years, but the point is that nothing could be brought out of the hardware that was initially pioneering. The idea cannot be developed at the level that the appearance of the first cameras meant. Out of ideas, and let’s face it, it’s no wonder. At the same time, the name GoPro still sounds good today, anyone who can do it, can afford it, buys it. And those who don’t are the selection among Chinese competitors, among whom, except for the name, we often find at least as good, if not better, than our great predecessor.

Technológia

As with phones, there are important points in the hardware that are worth mentioning. Here are the chipset and sensor, and of course the optics and, depending on them, the image and video resolution, the number of frames per second, and the presence or absence of features such as anti-shake. There are obviously other important details such as the back panel display. size, resolution, or whether you can navigate the menu by tapping or using buttons. The size of the battery, the number and quality of accessories are also important.

MGCOOL Explorer Pro 4K 30fps Sports Camera allwinner 1

Unfortunately, it is very easy to wear a vest with action cameras because most manufacturers lie unscrupulously in our eyes with the specification. It is common that although we know the hardware in the camera, we know what it is capable of, we still see better values on the data sheet. For example, we know that a given sensor is physically incapable of taking 4K shots because there simply aren’t as many pixels that would be needed for 4K, yet, there’s a big 4K logo flourishing on the camera there. You can ask how they can do this, and the answer is simple. Most people won’t look after what kind of chipset, what kind of sensor is working in the camera before buying, so it is only after the purchase that they face the sad fact that they have been deceived. If you find out at all, because most cameras still do some kind of recording in 4K, but there will be no thanks for that. If this happens with a camera ordered from a web store, especially if you are coming from a distant country, chances are the buyer won’t even return the camera.

We have already written an article on this topic, you can read it here: 5 signs you can tell that you are going to buy a fake 4K sports camera!

ambarella a12

What may be a little positive in this story is that a serious percentage of users don’t even need 4K resolution, full HD is plenty for them, which in turn is essentially done by any camera available today without error. You may ask, if I am already recording, why not do it in 4K? The answer is that because storing 4K content is quite space consuming and it doesn’t hurt to cut it in a mid-capacity power plant at home, meaning you shouldn’t even try it under a Core i5 processor and 8GB of memory, but even with this hardware, the task will be moaning. So let’s stick to the fact that 4K is a bit of a gentleman’s passion for now, especially where we can’t even watch the recording in 4K because we don’t have a display with that resolution either with us or the whole family.

Test videos

It's really just a sentence or two. Unfortunately, I don’t have all the cameras in my hands, so I can’t make videos with them and I can’t upload them to the server in downloadable form. This would be necessary because Youtube is hopelessly dropping better recordings, so test videos often don’t even tell the difference between one camera or another. Although I felt it was important to look for videos, the point will still be as described, because the manufacturers of sensors and chipsets are not lying, while some camera manufacturers are pushing zero-reality advertising into our faces.

What is this article about?

First of all, it will be a top 10 list we are used to, in which we will see which action cameras are selling the most in our favorite Chinese store. We love lists like this because we believe that so many people can’t go wrong, meaning there’s a reason for popularity in general. However, we spice up this list with a description of the cameras, as well as what the hardware built into them is capable of in real life.

Let’s not even drag on the time, let’s tap into the horses, let’s see the tenth place camera first!

10. Elephone ELE Explorer 4K Ultra HD camera - $ 56,99 (~ $ 15)

The name Elephone is best known through its phones, but of course they also make other things like cameras. The 4K mark has been recorded on this camera, as they are today, as it can no longer be sold without it, no one will buy it. Let’s say I think this hype is a bit superfluous for now, but that’s my opinion, even someone who watches Suleiman on a CRT TV at home wants it.

Original Elephone ELE Explorer 1

The ELE Explorer is a completely standard-looking camera anyway, faithfully following the path trodden by GoPro. It is also average based on its physical dimensions, weighs 62 grams and measures 5,9 x 4,1 x 2,4 centimeters. The control has no surprises either, there is a power button on the front, you can navigate the page with the down and up buttons in the menu, and you can save the setting with the top button. There are two connectors, one via which we can charge or save the recorded material and HDMI through which we can transfer the camera image to an external device.

The all-in-one camera comes with the usual all-in-one accessories. We get a waterproof housing, self-adhesive fasteners for a helmet, for example, and a fastener for the handlebars of the bicycle. Perhaps the only interesting thing is the small tripod on which we can mount the camera.

Now let’s see the specification and uncover the real capabilities of the camera!

The Allwinner V3 chipset is pretty popular with 4K cameras, which is weird because it can’t do 4K. Of course, there are quite a few of these chip sets, and Allwinner is the middle of the three best-known fake, or fake 4K sets, for quality. The best is the Novatek 96660, and the worse end is the various nonsense of Sunplus. So we have a chipset that doesn't know 4K, but what about the sensor? We are lucky with it, because the OV4689 is only 4 megapixels, so it doesn't know 4K either, it lacks about 8 megapixels. So this camera is just lying about its 4K capability, which can already be seen by the fact that 15 frames per second speed has been given for 4K resolution video. It’s good to know that this is done by the camera taking 15 interpolated photos - because it’s physically incapable of taking photos in 4K - and then the photos are stitched together by the software into a movie, if the end result can be ridiculed as a movie.

Rating: Not recommended - Leaving the Allwinner chipset, but the OV4689 sensor is forgettable. All this at a price like the next camera. Forget that!

9.  EleCam Explorer Elite 4K Action Camera - $ 58,99

The ninth on the list, the ninth most popular camera of the last month, is also made by Elephone. It is slightly larger in size than the previous camera, 5,92 x 4,10 x 2,98 centimeters, but weighs less than 55 grams.

Elephone EleCam Explorer Elite 1

This camera is already familiar to me, both the inside and the outside are exactly the same as an Excelvan camera. The interior can be found in several such cameras, I also have one, but mine also has an Excelvan inscription. The camera is completely standard in terms of capabilities, the number and placement of the connectors are the same as seen on the previous Elephone camera. The accessories are good quality - I can adjust this first hand - but the tripod added to the previous camera is not included here. Come to the point, let’s see what the Elephone Explorer Elite can do in reality.

You will have a double feeling with this camera, I am enveloping this. On paper, it’s not bad at all, both the chipset and the sensor are quite common. The latter is not a young piece, it was unveiled at the end of 2011, so we may have serious doubts about the resolution, it can't even record in native 4K resolution. The same is true with the chipset, the actual value in resolution and number of frames is 2880 x 2160 pixels at 24 frames per second. This is not a very good letter of recommendation so far.

Luckily, I have hands-on experience with this chipset sensor pair, as I wrote not as Elephone, but as I look at the packaging the two cameras are made in one place. The point is that the camera is perfect in 1080p. The image is clear, it doesn't blur on the edges, there is no distortion, except of course from the 170-degree viewing angle, and the software anti-shake leaves nothing to be desired. Maybe I’m not surprising by saying that he loves light, we’ll get really nice colors and sharp edges in good light, but luckily we do most sports during the day, not at night. This camera is well worth the price if you stay at 1080p!

Rating: Limited recommended - Only for 1080p videos, but with perfect, deceptive quality and last but not least vibration damping.

8. H9 Ultra HD 4K Action Camera - $ 39,99

H9 Ultra HD 4K Action 1

The black horse in the field. Specifically, it’s just gray, because although I have no idea who makes what kind of sensor works in it, the chipset is familiar, unfortunately. The dimensions and weight of the camera are the same as the Elephone camera, which ranks 10th on the list, but the chipset is different, so it’s certainly not the same camera just in a different mockery. . The front panel is different, but the position of the buttons is the same, though, that means nothing, almost every camera is where they are. However, there is a camera in this list called EKEN H9R below, which has a letter R in its type, which indicates the remote function, i.e. remote control. The capabilities, weight, and even appearance of the camera are the same, but if that’s not suspicious enough, then the software that can be installed on our mobile is the same. So after some sherlocking, we can almost certainly say that this camera and Eken’s camera are the same. This is really interesting, say, because they ask for $ 53, and therefore $ 40, which doesn’t matter, especially since the description says it comes with a remote control.

So far the good news, now let’s see the specification and evaluation, I promise the satisfied smile will soon disappear from your face!

As I wrote above, I am in serious trouble with this camera. Unfortunately, I was also unable to identify the manufacturer, so little things like the type of sensor are completely undetectable. It’s some luck to know at least the chipset, so we can confidently say that this camera can’t record in 4K in a native way either. Let's say it doesn't cost much in return, so for some reason the price is obvious, it's not a 4K camera. As far as the chipset is concerned, I still know that in terms of capabilities, the previous camera is in a weight class with the Novatek 96660, but based on countless test videos and consonant reviews on the net, the image quality is not nearly as good as Novatek's. Let's say the price can really compensate even compared to the Novatekes camera, because it doesn't really matter whether we leave 11 or 16 thousand forints at the checkout.

Evaluation: Limited recommendation - Mostly for children for the summer holidays, or if it is strictly around 10 thousand forints, which we spend on the budget for a camera!

7. ThiEYE T5 Edge Native 4K WiFi Action Camera - $ 99,99

ThiEYE has gained a really good reputation in recent years. No wonder, since good cameras are made at affordable prices. And the good thing about this case is to take it bloody seriously, because this is the company that writes to the camera that it’s 4K and takes it seriously. Okay, the fact is that the T5 Edge is the entry level to them, so then it knows less than the more expensive cameras over $ 150, but at least we can take real 4K shots with it.

thieye T5 edge 2

It’s a wonderful thing, for example, that for $ 100, we get electronic vibration damping, which the manufacturer also heads up with a gyroscope to make the smoothness of the shots even more perfect, not a single small vibration left. But that's not all extra. you can control the Camera with a remote control, but even with a voice command, although this can only be done in English. So far, all the news is good, let’s see the specification and evaluation to see if that will be the case either, or let’s be disappointed again!

We can finally rejoice, here is a camera that was not only jokingly written about 4K resolution, but, you really know it. What’s more, we get a frame rate of 4 frames for 30K, which is already an appreciable figure, not like 24 or 15 frames that are bad (not even true) for a joke. If that’s not good enough, it’s important to know that the camera has electronic image stabilization, but not only in 1080p, but also at the maximum 4K resolution, which is performance to be glazed over, especially when looking at the price.

Rating: Highly Recommended - True 4K resolution at an affordable price!

6. Xiaomi My Sphere Camera 4K Panorama Action Camera - $ 259,99

Xiaomi has been my favorite manufacturer for a long time. This camera is a really fine wall, you could say, since you don’t just look ahead, you see everything around you. This is accomplished by finding sensors and optics on two opposite sides of the camera. The latter is wide-angle with a 190-degree viewing angle. Because the entire circle is 360 degrees, it can be seen that the images of the two viewing angles greater than 180 degrees not only touch each other, but also overlap in a thin band. So all you need is good software and hardware of the right strength to convert this image into a sphere, creating a complete spherical panorama. The cradle of these cameras is precisely the accuracy of the combination of the two images, that's where the thing, that is, the quality, usually slips.

Xiaomi Mi Sphere Camera 4K Panorama 1

Xiaomi hasn’t spared any hardware, the Ambarella A12 and Sony’s 16-megapixel IMX206 sensor pair are used by larger manufacturers for their expensive, high-end cameras, so the GoPro, for example, has already reached out to this combo. So there will be no problem in this way, but the thing may still slip into the fact that we have to reckon with a different resolution than usual, and there is also the problem of joining the two hemispheres outlined above. I suggest you watch test videos on Youtube before you buy to see if it will suit you (I suspect Youtube is pretty much degrading in quality).

Let's go into a bit more concretes as well. The camera weighs 70 grams and measures 6 x 5 x 4 centimeters. The 4 centimeters here must also include the bulge of the optics, the housing is thinner than this. The camera doesn't come with a waterproof case, but the camera body itself, which is made of aluminum anyway, is IP67 rated, so even if I don't take it with me, a little water won't hurt it, like it can withstand a quieter rain. The accessory list of the Xiaomi Mi Sphere is not very extensive, we only find a tripod and a case outside the camera. You don’t have to be very frustrated, there is a threaded mounting point at the bottom of the camera housing, and there are countless camera accessories on the net for pot money.

While you can already guess that there will be no problem with the hardware, read the evaluation as well!

As you may have read, Xiaomi’s camera is a very special piece, but in this paragraph we are not interested in it, but in its ability to do what it promises us on paper. The good news is that yes. The Ambarella A12 is one of the best in chipset, and the Sony IMX206 sensor is capable of native 4K recording. There are two sensors working in this camera, but it is important to know that in this camera, due to the spherical panorama of the half per sensor, more pixels have to be handled than in the case of an average camera. Based on the test videos available online, the Xiaomi solution looks particularly good among 360-degree cameras, but if you don’t need a panorama or magic that can be enjoyed with virtual glasses, you’ll do better with a traditional single-sensor camera.

Rating: Recommended - Very good 360 degree camera, it captures everything around you, a real specialty, although you expect that the picture quality will not be equal to that of a high-end traditional camera, and also that there is a lot of data in 4K, so if you want to watch for a video, you will need to add some iron to your machine as well.

5. SJCAM SJ7 STAR WiFi Action Camera 4K - $ 149,59

SJCAM is also a well-known brand in Hungary. The choice of company or name is quite interesting, so I’ll tell you. Anno, a camera called SJ4000 appeared on the market a few years ago. As for the SJ4000, it should be noted that not one but many companies manufactured such a camera, which was possible so that the camera technology could be licensed, whoever bought the license could have made such a camera. However, many ingenious Chinese companies chose to save a bit, and as a result, they spared significant components from the hardware, meaning they were replaced with cheaper solutions. So it may have been that we bought an SJ4000 FHD camera from China that knew practically 320 x 200 resolution, which was then upgraded to 1920 x 1080 pixels with software. Maybe I don’t have to brush up on what quality videos we could have made this way. Then came a company that saw the opportunity and added the word CAM to the well-known name SJ, and then sold its product as the original SJCAM SJ4000. There was a lot of business acumen, but there was so much to be written for their benefit that nothing was saved from their cameras and really usable FHD videos could be made with them. Since then, the SJCAM name has fought for itself, which is no wonder, as the company has produced really good cameras - not counting a trip or two.

SJCAM SJ7 STAR 1

The SJCAM SJ 7 Star is the most expensive camera on the list, thanks to a really good camera. We get decent hardware and decent knowledge for our money, there is regular vibration damping and a well-used remote control is also included in the package. What’s more, with some extras, the back panel display is touch-sensitive, meaning you can adjust settings without physical buttons. Another positive is that you can use an external microphone, which is a great help if you want to record good quality sound next to the picture.

The SJCAM SJ 7 Star is able to make videos in 4K resolution not only on its behalf, but indeed. However, our joy may not be complete because although the Sony IMX117 sensor 12 megapixels is enough for 4K, but only so much so that we have to give up electronic vibration damping wherever we want to capture video above 1080p / 60 FPS. In addition, the number of frames of 4 in a 30K shot is not a fence-breaking value either, although competitors don't know any better. I wouldn’t really force this mode of operation. In return, both the chipset and the sensor are good quality pieces, so you can shoot good quality movies in 1080 and 2,5K in 2,7p or limited due to the lack of vibration damping.

Rating: Recommended - Excluding the surcharge for the manufacturer's name, the camera can even be a good buy. 1080p is perfect, so if you get that resolution calmly enough, you won’t be disappointed with it.

4. Hawkeye Firefly Micro 1080P Mini Action Camera - $ 23,99

Hawkeye Firefly Micro 1

Hawkeye makes good cameras. It is worth choosing from the company’s products because we may not be very disappointed. The Firefly micro is a very special piece. His knowledge is very limited, but he is perfect for what he was meant to do. This goal was nothing more than to create a well-used, lightweight drone camera. It worked well, true due to the size and weight of the camera, apart from just accepting 1080p shots you can’t do anything about, but it does.

We could freak it out with a crappy camera from a more reputable manufacturer, but if we did, we wouldn’t be fair. This is a special piece, only 24 x 24 x 32 millimeters, the area of use is also different from regular action cameras. The manufacturer offers it as a body camera or image recorder that can be mounted on drones due to its small size and low weight. So its physical abilities are dewy compared to larger cameras, but if we look at it as a unique, special device, it will find its target audience.

Rating: Recommended - For special tasks only, such as small racing drones. We don’t recommend it for summer adventures, but it can also be good for kids to play because of the low price.

EKEN H9R 1

If you read everything from the top down with honor, you will understand why I am not writing about it in more detail. It’s even more interesting that I wrote the review before I realized the turbidity of the camera called the H9. So every word of the evaluation is in place, take it seriously!

If there is a manufacturer on earth who would not miss the Eken it is. I haven’t seen a camera from them that really knew what the specification promises - although there may be one. Unfortunately, the H9R doesn’t hang out of this line. In principle, a 4K-capable camera is still capable of full HD recording, but everything above it is just smoke and magic. The Sunplus chipset is the bottom of it all, just as the OV4869 sensor is just there to have something in this camera to generate electrical signals from the incoming light. Based on the videos on the internet, you have basic problems with light, that is, if there is too much trouble, if there is too little. I’m not even talking about the fact that the actions usually take place while on the move, recording it in normal quality without vibration damping is a completely impossible task.

Rating: Not recommended - Bitang is expensive compared to your knowledge, I would recommend it to a child for $ 25 cheaper this summer, but I would definitely not recommend buying it at this price.

2. Xiaomi Mijia Mini Camera 4K 30fps Action Camera - $ 133,99

Xiaomi Mijia Camera Mini 1

Another Xiaomi camera. The price is over $ 100, meaning it doesn’t count as cheap among Chinese cameras. It has very good capabilities on paper, but a serious drawback is that the manufacturer doesn’t add any accessories, so we have to ring for extra dollars for these. Compared to the competition, it is large in size, though thin, and weighs 99 grams, which the manufacturer says is light, although there are plenty of lighter cameras on the market. In addition to the gyroscope, vibration reduction is also aided by an accelerometer, which is an extra, as is the touch-sensitive rear display. True, this should fit into the price of the Xiaomi Mijia Mini, especially since not a lousy waterproof case comes with it. You can also control the camera remotely, but only on paper or if you add a separate remote control. So my emotions are a bit mixed, because on the one hand I still have Xiaomi, whose products I love, but on the other hand I smell a little money-pulling in the air.

Well, but what does the specification say if the evaluation is good can even be worth buying.

Xiaomi, yet the figure curves down a bit. The reason for this is the 8 megapixel, not very fresh, but at least excellent quality Sony sensor. 8 megapixels is physically enough for 4K resolution, but it’s no longer enough to turn on anti-shake at that resolution. This is pretty unfortunate, especially considering that the camera has been priced above $ 100, and you have to battle it out with very combo competitors in this region. Plus, I wouldn’t dare classify the camera in the upper house based on the test videos available online.

Rating: Recommended - Recommended, but it took a little benevolence to do so. It’s not worth more than $ 100, despite its otherwise pleasant abilities, at most for those who cling to Xiaomi.

1. H9R Waterproof Action Camera 4K Ultra HD - $ 53,39

FuriBee H9R 1

The thing is, by the end of this article, a really good camera would have been very good as something of a really percussive snap. It actually became a snap, just not the way I imagined. The most popular camera has become an iron with the corner of the number curved while browsing the specification. FuriBee is not a bad name, although I have met it with drones so far. The fact that he also makes a camera was surprising to me, but maybe only I was inattentive so far. Bottom line, I’m not writing anything about this camera because I don’t happen to want any of my readers to reinforce in keeping the title of my favorite camera. I would throw it in the trash, set it on fire, crush it. I’m not saying there’s such hardware up the list anymore, but at least it wasn’t the winner of the most popular sports camera award. One of my eyes is crying, the other is sobbing. On the most popular camera, I would prefer to jump with a pair of legs in my iron-on motorcycle boots. Here is a "great" chipset, the Sunplus 6350, which, according to reliable sources, is capable of 10 FPS at 4K resolution. The nature of the sensor is shrouded in obscurity, some pages say OV4869, but even the manufacturer's Omnivision website does not recognize such a sensor. However, you know the 4689, which is also not capable of 4K, because it is only 4 megapixels, so the number of physical pixels does not reach 4K. This is where my theory that many people cannot be wrong fails. But!

Rating: Not recommended - Buy it only if you think a shaky, blurry 1080p video is enough. You get that performance for $ 20-25 cheaper, to put it mildly. (wow but i'm angry)

You can buy the camera here: H9R Waterproof Action Camera 4K Ultra HD

What do we offer?

Yes, the principle that so many people cannot be wrong has really been broken. But of course so many people can be wrong, they can fall for the manufacturers' "eavesdropping". Fortunately, we see through the sieve, and we hope that you, the readers, found this article useful. So when you reach the end of the article, you can ask the question: it's good, but if they're all crap, which one do you recommend?

Luckily, there are some cameras on offer that we dare to recommend!

  • Cheap camera: EleCam Explorer Elite 4K Action Camera - The Novatek 96660 chipset and the Sony IMX078 sensor are a good pair. You can't do regular 4K, but you'll be happy with the results in 1080p, in full HD!
  • Mid-priced camera - ThiEYE T5 Edge Native 4K WiFi Action Camera “Its price doesn’t kick stars out of the sky yet, its performance is decent, and the picture quality is really very good, especially compared to its price.
  • Expensive camera: SJCAM SJ7 STAR WiFi Action Camera 4K “This camera knows everything you would expect from an affordable camera today. He does not lie, he does not fog what he promises to give.
  • Special camera: Xiaomi My Sphere Camera 4K Panorama Action Camera - A real specialty, strong hardware and a full 360-degree spherical panorama, so it captures everything around you. The completed footage can be viewed with virtual reality glasses, in which case it is as if we are also in the center of the events, or it can be used for Youtube videos in which we can look around by moving the mouse. Good fun, but quite expensive.
