Cheap good: Seasonic SS-500ET

Those with a more serious configuration or more experienced users know that it is not worth saving on the power supply. Unfortunately, those who start with a 2-3 thousand forint meal in order to save costs know this, and are then forced to face its disadvantages, not infrequently with the fact that the "cheap meat" in question may get tired of the service after, say, 1,5 years. We don't want to say that everyone needs a HUF 1000 80 W product, but a branded, stable 8-12 W power supply that costs 450-500 thousand can save you from problems for a long time. We also know that for many of us this amount is not exactly a pittance, so if you pay it for something, you want a guarantee or at least a promise that you will get goods of the right quality and knowledge for your money.

The name Seasonic should clearly be placed among the high-quality brands in nutritious ranks, but most of the time the name is accompanied by a price tag that immediately deters less affluent buyers. Well, we’re dealing with a Seasonic unit, which can be said to be entry-level within the brand, and which, in terms of amount, falls into a price range that can even be considered for customers with a thin wallet.

Our subject is the Seasonic SS-500ET, which already shows enough modesty on the outside, maybe a little beyond, as it came without all sorts of boxes and supplies, a thread in nothing. The metal frame is plain gray blown steel. The rear ventilation grille follows the well-proven beehive shape, which is only broken by the tightness of the toggle switch and the supply connection area. Installation can be done with holes and plate screws in the usual places. On the other sides, the metal plates are ventilation-free, of course the exception is the upper side, where the 12 cm air agitator is placed.

So much for the external prank, so far all impressions prove that the designers have tried to cut costs, but now let’s look at what and how many devices we can use by the connectors. Well, don’t expect a sea of variation and easy coupling, the repertoire includes five molex, four SATA and two FDD connectors, and one eight-pin and one six-pin PCI Express connector to power our graphics card. In addition to the 24-pin main power supply, we also get an eight- and four-pin socket to supply the motherboard. The fact that the cables are not stocked is still survivable in this segment, but why you had to choose a version without molex removal straps for molexes is harder to understand. It’s okay that the most expensive solutions shouldn’t and shouldn’t be used on an entry-level power supply, but it’s hard to believe that choosing a better quality of these five connectors would have resulted in a drastic additional cost. It may seem like a trifle, but they can make life very bitter in everyday use.
