Nvidia: The future belongs to PC games

Nvidia is openly confronting whipping up PC games, and this time it has been reported that gaming revenue is steadily rising, unlike consoles. Thus, revenues appear to level off in the future.

Unsurprisingly, Nvidia’s statement is really, but so far they have not supported the PC market in this way, as this time we also get slides next to the words. These are meant to convince us and the developers that it’s really worth making games for PC as well. It also underpins the points that make this so thought. Sure, the statements need to be treated with strong reservations, but forecasts for 2014 show that there may be more revenue for a game sold on a PC than for the console version.

Among other things, performance is one such aspect, because according to the demonstrations - and of course this is obvious - the graphics cards built into computers allow for more beautiful games. According to the analysis, a current high-end graphics card could be up to ten times more powerful at similar graphics settings than its console rival. The explanation for this is simple, as the three main players in the current console market are the Microsoft Xbox, which hit the market in 2005, the Sony-developed PlayStation 3rd generation from 2006 and the 2006 Nintendo Wii; they have been on the market for 5-6 years now and this is not expected to change until 2013. That’s why the improvement in graphics mainly enriches the PC’s arsenal, which, admittedly, can make it a little more appealing to gamers.

It was also said that the steady increase in profits is also realistic because of the growing popularity of software sold over the internet, for example in systems such as Steam. As a result, the developer does not incur as much cost as a boxed copy, so on the one hand you can earn more revenue and on the other hand operate at more attractive prices, so you can get up to half as much games on your computer, which can also take users to PCs.

But here comes the black soup, and of course Nvidia hasn’t talked about it anymore. In the case of desktops, there are much higher costs, which is essentially negligible in the case of consoles, as a console can now be taken home for around 50 and 70 thousand forints, depending on which manufacturer's product you want to sign up for; but a computer that provides a gaming experience of the same quality as the GTX 580 included in Nvidia's own presentations, for example, would currently cost about 300 forints for a complete machine. The other serious problem was the danger and loss of revenue posed by free file-sharing, which was also not mentioned; and the fact that a game is available on sites of this nature almost from the moment it is released is completely free. Moreover, it is not uncommon for them to be available on file shares before they are released. Of course, this option is also a problem with consoles, but not to the same extent as with a PC, be it a desktop or laptop computer.
