Introductory

Robotic vacuum cleaners have revolutionized home cleaning in the last decade. What was once science fiction has now become an everyday reality: intelligent machines that autonomously navigate our homes, vacuum and mop. The latest and at the same time the most advanced stage of this development is the Narwal Freo Z Ultra, this high-end robot cleaning system, which will be released on the market this year, i.e. in the fall of 2024.

Narwal is a relatively new player in the robot vacuum cleaner market. The Chinese company was founded in 2016 and launched its first product in 2019. Since then, it has developed rapidly and has now become a key player in the premium segment with its innovative solutions. The Narwal Freo Z Ultra is the manufacturer's latest flagship model, an improved version of the previous Freo and Freo X Ultra models.

I already had a Narwal as a guest this year, and even the Narwal Freo X Plus, which I could only write about in a high level. The barely 100 robot beat the Xiaomi machines in its own category, which is a crazy big word.

Modern homes present diverse challenges to a robotic vacuum cleaner. Parquet, tiles, carpet - they all require different approaches. Pet hair, crumbs dropped by children, hard-to-reach corners all test the capabilities of these machines. According to the manufacturer, the Narwal Freo Z Ultra offers an answer to these challenges with its advanced sensors and decision-making system supported by artificial intelligence.

This decision-making system seems like an exaggeration, but believe me, it really is, but you can also read about it in the experience section!

Obstacle detection has always been a critical point for robot vacuum cleaners. Who hasn't heard horror stories about a robot spreading dog poop in the apartment? The Narwal Freo Z Ultra promises significant progress in this field with two 1080p RGB cameras and an advanced AI system that is said to be able to recognize and avoid more than 100 types of obstacles.

However, cleaning does not only consist of vacuuming. Modern robots are said to be capable of mopping (in my opinion, more likely than not), and the Narwal Freo Z Ultra promises a high level in this area as well. The combination of its rotating mop pads and intelligent water dosing offers an effective solution for cleaning hard floor surfaces.

But a robot vacuum cleaner is only as good as how convenient it is to use. The Narwal Freo Z Ultra also strives to stand out in this field with its large capacity dust container, automatic emptying and cleaning station, and intuitive application control. The goal is that the user has to deal with cleaning as little as possible.

The Narwal Freo Z Ultra thus promises a product that represents the next level of robot vacuuming. But does it live up to expectations in everyday use? Let's take a closer look at what this new top model can do!

External

Narwal Freo Z Ultra is an elegant looking device even at first glance. Unlike the previous Freo models, which were resplendent in white, the Z Ultra comes in matte gray. This choice of color is not only beneficial from an aesthetic point of view, but also practical, as fingerprints and minor dirt are less visible.

The structure of the robot vacuum cleaner follows the usual circular design, its diameter is 355 mm and its height is 109,6 mm. At the top is the small tower of the LiDAR navigation system, surrounded by two control buttons. One button is responsible for the start/stop function, while the other is the "home" button, which can be used to return the device to the docking station. The top cover is magnetically fixed, and underneath we find the dust container and other parts that require maintenance. The Reset button is also here.

The heart of the obstacle detection system is located at the front of the robot: two 1080p RGB cameras with an ultra-wide viewing angle of 136 degrees. This dual camera system enables advanced obstacle detection and avoidance. There is even a shock-detecting bumper on the front, which protects the device in case of physical contact. We also find a sensor on the side, infrared works here.

The bottom of the Narwal Freo Z Ultra has two side brushes, two rotating mop pads and a main brush. The main brush is blue in color and has a combined rubber-bristle design. The sensors located at the bottom help to detect stairs and other level differences. An interesting innovation is the holder on the side of the device, which holds a soft cloth, especially for cleaning the skirting boards. This is like a wind noise filter for microphones, also known as "dead squirrel".

The docking station, or as Narwal calls it, the “all-in-one” station, is also matte gray in color, and its dimensions are 430,8 x 462 x 388 mm, which is pretty big. Or should we say, unusually large! At the top is a round touch-sensitive color display that displays information and allows for basic controls. The water tanks are located under the cover on the top of the station: a 5 liter clean water tank and a 4,5 liter waste water tank.

At the front of the station, under a magnetic cover, is the dust container, which hides a 2,5-liter dust bag. This is a significant improvement compared to previous models, where dust collection took place in the robot. Here, under the lid, there is also a container for the special, scented cleaning agent available for the vacuum cleaner, from which the machine automatically dispenses the cleaning agent during cleaning. At the bottom of the station is the robot's parking space, where the device charges, empties its dust container, washes it with clean water, and then dries its mop pads.

Although the exact weight of the robot was not given by the manufacturer, it may be 3-4 kg. It's enough to keep it stable on the floor, but not too heavy to be easily moved when needed.

Overall, the Narwal Freo Z Ultra and its docking station have a modern, clean look that would fit well into the design of most homes, or even a SpaceX spaceship. The matte gray color gives it an elegant look while also being practical. The design of the device suggests functionality, all elements are purposefully placed to provide the best possible cleaning performance.

I need to highlight the small window in the upper right part of the front panel, behind which a blue LED lights up. Behind the window, illuminated by blue light, we see the cleaning fluid and how the docking station releases the spézi scented cleaning agent, which we can buy for the robot, into the water. Well, if anything, this thing looks pretty awesome!

The Narwal Freo Z Ultra has impressive technical data. Its suction power is 12 Pascal, which is roughly outstanding in its category, surpassing many of its competitors. This high performance allows you to effectively remove dust and dirt from various surfaces, including carpets.

The navigation of the device is supported by LiDAR technology, which maps the environment with laser distance measurement. This enables accurate navigation even in the dark. Obstacle detection is supported by two 1080p resolution RGB cameras with an ultra-wide viewing angle of 136 degrees. Image processing is performed by two AI chips, reportedly performing 4 trillion calculations per second.

The battery of the Narwal Freo Z Ultra has a capacity of 5200 mAh, which, according to the manufacturer, can be enough to clean an area of ​​up to 200 square meters with one charge. The exact operating time can of course be affected by the chosen cleaning method and the type of surface.

The mopping function is provided by two rotating microfibre mopping pads, which rotate at a speed of 180 rpm and exert a compressive force of 12N. Mop pads can be raised 12mm (and automatically raised) to avoid wetting carpets in combined cleaning mode. Of course, this also means that we get advanced carpet detection.

According to the manufacturer, the 2,5-liter dust bag of the docking station can last up to 120 days, thanks to the built-in compression function. The clean water tank has a capacity of 5 liters, while the waste water tank has a capacity of 4,5 liters, which requires less frequent refilling and emptying.

The device is controlled and customized primarily through the Narwal mobile application. The application has an intuitive user interface and offers many features to the users. When starting the app for the first time, it guides you through setting up the device and starting the first cleaning, which takes approximately 10-15 minutes.

This application was no longer new to me, interesting points worth highlighting again, such as the first setup, where the app even asks if you have a pet. Esmement.

In the application, it is possible to customize the cleaning map. Users can name rooms, put up virtual walls, and designate restricted zones. The map can handle several floors, so the device can also be used effectively in multi-storey homes.

A wide range of cleaning settings are available in the application. You can choose between vacuuming only, mopping only, or a combination of the two. The suction power and water dosage can also be adjusted. The application also allows you to set timed cleanings, so the robot can clean when no one is home.

Once again, I have to highlight the Freo mode, also found in the name of the Narwal Freo Z Ultra, which enables a fully automated cleaning. This is a bit like the automatic mode of upright vacuum cleaners, only much more advanced, as there are many sensors in the machine. It senses the amount of dust on the floor, but also sees if the floor is left dirty somewhere. So, thanks to the sensors, in Freo mode, everything from the water dosage to the selection of the suction strength changes automatically and, of course, dynamically during cleaning according to the detected dirt.

The Freo mode works in such a way that it can be selected (switched on) for all types of cleaning, including vacuuming, mopping and their combined use. However, there is another interesting feature of these modes, namely that you can specify which way the machine cleans for each room. By default, this will always be the activated Freo mode, but if you turn it off, you can even set different suction strength, water volume or the number of times to clean the given room for each room. The latter cannot be more than three.

So the Freo mode is useful, good, pleasant, but if you want you can override it, turn it off, and set everything manually, even divided into rooms.

The Narwal app also provides detailed statistics on cleanings. You can see the size of the cleaned area, the duration of the cleaning, you can see the distance traveled on the map, and you can even see how much dust the device has collected. This can be useful in optimizing cleaning routines.

An interesting feature is that the Narwal Freo Z Ultra's cameras can be viewed remotely via the app, so the device can even function as a mobile security camera. However, this is more of a fun extra than a real security solution.

The application also allows you to change the settings of the docking station. For example, the temperature of the water used to clean the mop pads, or the strength of the hot air used for drying, can be regulated, both in three stages. Narwal says that on the hottest setting, the temperature is even enough to de-germ, which in practice means you can disinfect MOPs and prevent fungus as well.

Well, because of such "little things" the Narwal Freo Z Ultra became the best, most advanced robot vacuum cleaner on the market. These settings can help you clean more efficiently and prevent unpleasant odors.

Overall, the Narwal app provides comprehensive and user-friendly control of the Narwal Freo Z Ultra, allowing users to make the most of the device's capabilities and customize the cleaning process to their own needs. As a Hungarian, the only negative is that he doesn't know our native language, but fortunately the interface is very clear, informative, and easy to learn.

As you can see, the machine is top notch, to put it mildly. Now the only question is how these capabilities, which sound good on paper, were put into practice, that is, how well the machine cleans! You will find out in the next chapter!

Experiences

I have to admit that I have never tested a robotic vacuum cleaner as thoroughly as the Narwal Freo Z Ultra. There is a simple reason for this, I was well aware that the role of the MOP in these machines is to wipe up the last layer of dust left on the floor after vacuuming. It could have been any MOP, that was the experience, so I watched the tests on YouTube with a smile, where they tried to clean up the ketchup with the smooth and vibrating MOP, the machines smeared the stuff all over the floor.

So I usually neglected the mopping and relied on the vacuuming skills instead! However, with the Narwal Freo Z Ultra, there is one more thing that has been waiting for thorough testing, and that is its famous obstacle avoidance ability. For this purpose, I made a Duplo, a LEGO and a cable test. In the case of the latter, I investigated whether the vacuum cleaner would eat the cables left on the ground or not.

During the test, it turned out that I could monitor obstacle avoidance during the mopping test as well, because a bit too much ketchup and jam got on the floor. Well, let's not run so far ahead!

How well does navigation work in the Narwal Freo Z Ultra?

LiDAR-based navigation enables fast and accurate mapping. During the tests, the robot was able to create a detailed map of an average home in less than 20 minutes (3 minutes was enough for my office). Although there were minor inaccuracies - for example, a wall was missed in the first pass - these could easily be corrected with another mapping pass. The detail of the map may not reach the level of some Roborocks, but the difference is only a hair's breadth.

When it comes to obstacle detection, the Narwal Freo Z Ultra really excelled. The two RGB cameras and the advanced AI system were able to recognize and avoid even small and flat objects such as a thin USB cable or a flat cardboard box. This is a significant improvement in the category and can be a great relief for users, especially when valuable cables or fragile objects need to be avoided.

Perhaps it would be worthwhile to insert a paragraph or two about mapping here!

The machine prepares the map at the first start. To do this, he runs all over the apartment, but he really runs, because he doesn't go around the walls or anything like that, he just goes into every room, takes a bite, and then comes out. He uses the laser to map the room, but not just any way. The artificial intelligence tries to identify the objects, so for example it found out which is the bedroom (it recognized the double bed), it found out which is the bathroom (it recognized the toilet bowl, and I think it deduced from the size of the room that it is not in the toilet), it found out where the dining room (he drew the dining table with the chairs), he recognized the kitchen (I have no idea what), and he also identified the living room from the couch. So the little one is quite thorough.

Draw the obstacles on the map. If it recognizes the obstacle, it is indicated by a small pictogram, e.g. it shows where it found a cable on the map. Of course, it also accurately indicates the location of the carpets. He made only one mistake, and it was quite an incomprehensible mistake. One wall between two rooms was missing. It's not a fatal error, because I can draw the missing wall when editing the map. But really, he didn't make any other mistakes!

Well, let's go into the details here! Be sure to watch the video test, it will reveal everything! I started with the Duplo test. This test turned out to be 98 percent, but I deducted that 2 percent only because one of the cubes was pushed a little bit by one of the side brushes. That's all that happened, the obstacle avoidance was first class!

The LEGO test didn't go so well. There was no great tragedy, just that one obstacle, the color of which was very similar to the color of the floor, escaped the plane's attention. The other obstacles, despite the fact that LEGO bricks are much smaller than Duplo bricks, were noticed and avoided by the machine. It's true that there was a cube that the side brush pushed a little while avoiding, but I don't consider this a big mistake. They are small cubes, they have no weight, even a breeze can push them away with a little exaggeration. All in all, I give the Narwal Freo Z Ultra 80 percent because of that one overlooked quirk!

The last test was the cable one. The machine performed this test flawlessly, so much so that it tried to get inside the curve of the cable to perform the cleaning there as well. You really can't get involved in the performance, the result is 100 percent! Regarding obstacle avoidance, I think it is important to mention that the top vacuum cleaner from Roborock that I had last time bled in all three tests. He either pushed the Duplo and LEGO bricks away or "ate" them, and the cables didn't work either, he wound up everything to hell. The last machine that didn't have similar capabilities was the Dreame Z10 Pro, but it didn't navigate that well either.

So the bottom line is, I've seen quite a few vacuum cleaners, but the Narwal Freo Z Ultra is the best I've come across so far, at least in terms of obstacle avoidance.

What is the cleaning ability of the Narwal Freo Z Ultra?

The mopping test was the first. With the Narwal Freo Z Ultra, you can't miss this either, since Narwal is proud of the machine's mopping performance. After the test, I say that I do not admire this, because what I experienced is really impressive! There were three stains on the floor. Mud (I sprinkled soil with water and spread it on the floor pretty hard), thick apricot jam and ketchup.

There were no problems with the earth and mud. The plane reached the dirt, slowed down and went over it in slow motion. After that, he turned back and "looked" at what was left on the floor and mopped up again. The machine is amazingly smart! Wait, that's nothing! If the machine detects that it is dealing with particularly stubborn dirt, it will wash the area twice in a row. But not in any way, first he goes across it, then lengthwise. Or vice versa, depending on where you look at it. The point is that you mop up diagonally here and there so that as few streaks as possible remain on the floor.

The jam and ketchup didn't turn out well at first, but that wasn't the vacuum cleaner's fault, it was mine. In particular, I put so much on the floor that the Narwal Freo Z Ultra thought it was an obstacle. It still went into the edge of the jam, but it avoided the big one nicely, as well as the ketchup stain. I had to spread both of them well by hand, after that Narwal Freo Z Ultra cleaned the same as the muddy part. In other words, it didn't just pass over the surface, it also clearly detected the amount of dirt and adjusted the machine's speed and cleaning efficiency accordingly.

Well, I alluded to this when I wrote at the beginning of the article that "This decision-making system seems excessive, but believe me, it really is, but you can read about it in the experience section!" Because the fact is that decision-making really takes place here, and in a very impressive way. If I've ever experienced the effective use of artificial intelligence anywhere, it was with the Narwal Freo Z Ultra!

There is one more "little thing" about mopping that shows how well the machine is programmed. You can choose several options in the app, there is only vacuuming, there is only mopping, there is vacuuming and mopping, and last but not least, there is vacuuming-after-mopping.

The essence of this is that on extremely dirty surfaces, the machine first collects the dirt, which it can vacuum up, and only washes it in the second cycle, so as not to spread the dirt. The thing means it works! He vacuumed, then went back to the dock and emptied the dust container. Then it's HOT!!! he washed the MOP in water, then started mopping up with the clean MOP. There's googly here!

How was the vacuuming?

I made a big mistake. I didn't wait for the floor to dry after the mopping test, so I spread the flour, rice, cocoa and soup pearls on the wet floor. Maybe I don't need to explain what the consequences were. The poor Narwal Freo Z Ultra was given such a tough task that I would not have thought of anyway. Let's say I don't mind it in hindsight, but I was a little annoyed at the time.

What finally happened was that I had to switch to the Vacuum then MOP function after vacuuming. I chose the roughest cleaning mode, I didn't let the Freo mode be smart for me. Vacuuming twice at full suction power, then mopping twice with maximum water, that was all it took to remove the dust and cocoa powder stuck to the floor. Pretty much. Because that's what happened in the end, I sent the machine to the floor three more times before I managed to remove the dried cocoa.

I would say that the machine bled during the test, but that wouldn't be true, because it was a test with a vacuum cleaner anyway, and it was able to stand up to it. It's another matter that scattering cocoa and flour on the wet floor was not the idea of ​​the century!

How was the cleaning summarized?

Mopping is perfect, but I must note that the Narwal also has a problem that is true for all robots that can mop PROPERLY. You have to go back to the dock every now and then to wash the MOP.

When we clean the apartment in the traditional way, we have a mop and a bucket with detergent water. As we move through the apartment, we take the bucket with us so that we can wash the rag. A vacuum cleaner, on the other hand, cannot take its docking station away from water or anything else, so it is forced to return to the docking station itself. This is not a problem in the case of one room, however, if the apartment is large and you want to wash the MOP frequently (every 8 square meters), then most of the cleaning time will be spent by the vacuum cleaner going back and forth between the rooms and the dock .

Consider the above before purchasing. If the apartment is large, but the vacuum cleaner will have plenty of time to clean, then don't worry about it. But if time is short, you either have to set the size of the area to be washed with water to the maximum or you have to skip mopping, which is one of the great advantages of the machine.

Vacuuming is flawless. At least almost. To be honest, I did not perceive the suction power of 12 pa in the quality of vacuuming. I'm not saying that there isn't that much, but 000 didn't seem weaker either. At the same time, the vacuuming on the hard floor (stone, laminate) was flawless. On the carpet, however, it could have been a little stronger, a little dirt remained here and there. It wasn't terrible either, I just had to mention it to be fair.

So, in summary, the Narwal Freo Z Ultra is one of the machines I have seen so far in terms of orientation, mapping, obstacle and storage detection, but rather the best. In terms of mopping, it is sensationally good compared to the average MOP, but also compared to vibrating MOP machines. He is very strong in vacuuming, but his knowledge is not outstanding. In other words, all things considered, I give it 90-95 percent, because apart from a few really small things, it is absolutely flawless!

Six little things I still need to mention

1. Even when unpacking, I noticed that the dust container has a plastic inner container. In addition, we get a second such internal tank as a spare next to the machine. I didn't know what this stuff was then, but I looked it up. Well, it's used to compact the dirt it picks up before it goes into the dust bag in the dock. This is said to save a lot of space in the dust bag, so you don't have to deal with the machine for months, at least if you only vacuum it.
2. There is an interesting feature, or rather a disadvantage, that no online test has mentioned so far. And this is that the machine does not want to fit into the dock when the dead squirrel on its side has not been used. The furry stuff gets stuck all the time, so it takes 5-10 tries to get it to fit. This disappeared during the test, I think the hairy towel became a little flatter during work, so by the end of the test, the Narwal Freo Z Ultra was always the first to enter the parking lot.
3. Another thing that made me smile. The robot can also be controlled with voice commands through the application. The manufacturer also willingly lists the instructions divided into groups. Yes, but as long as the names of the groups are in English (i.e. mopping and others), the voice commands are in Chinese. Of course not phonetically, but with Chinese characters. This is how we say thank you, Emese!
4. I already mentioned above that the machine dries the MOP after cleaning. Also, to wash it, but not just any way, but with hot water, to which you add the detergent yourself. However, I didn't mention that we can set in 3 steps how many viewing meters it should go back to the dock to wash the MOP after cleaning. If the apartment is not too dirty, it can be 20 square meters, if it is dirty, it can be 8 square meters. Well, that's the end of the test, let's draw conclusions!
5. There is a light on the front of the machine, which he switches on automatically. Obviously, if it's dark, turn it on. I think this is necessary so that the cameras can recognize objects even in the dark.
6. And finally, one more fun thing. In the application, we have the possibility to peek through the machine's camera. They say it's a security feature, so to speak, you can watch it at home (I don't recommend the device to unfaithful couples), but I don't think it gives much security, but it's good fun.

Again, this article wasn't short, but that's okay, it needed to be this long, and even so, things come to mind that maybe I should have written down. Overall, the Narwal Freo Z Ultra is a very notable entry into the high-end robotic vacuum cleaner market. Its main strength is undoubtedly its advanced obstacle detection system, which sets a new standard in the category. The combination of two RGB cameras and an advanced AI system allows the device to reliably avoid even minor obstacles, which is a big step forward in terms of user safety and comfort.

In terms of cleaning performance, the Narwal Freo Z Ultra tested excellent for me, both in terms of vacuuming and mopping. The 12.000 Pascal suction power and the intelligent mopping system prove to be an effective combination. Due to the suction power of 12 Pa, I did not even doubt the effectiveness of vacuuming, but the quality of mopping is disturbingly good. Or rather, it's perfect!

I put the machine through such a tough task, which almost certainly does not happen in a normal apartment, but the obstacle was overcome by the Narwal Freo Z Ultra without a mistake!

The device is easy to use and maintain, thanks to the well-designed docking station and user-friendly mobile application. High capacity tanks and advanced automation minimize the need for user intervention. Quiet operation is another positive, which makes the device suitable for use even at night.

The Narwal Freo Z Ultra can be a strong choice for those looking for an advanced, easy-to-use robot vacuum for homes with hard floors. The price puts it in the premium category, but in return it offers top technology and outstanding obstacle detection. While carpet and crevice cleaning still has room for improvement, it's likely to be an excellent choice for most users, especially if safe navigation and minimal user intervention is a priority. Overall, I have to say that the Narwal Freo Z Ultra is the one with the best autonomy out of all the robot vacuum cleaners I know. It can not only vacuum, but also mop up! You don't need to empty the dust container, but you don't need to fill the water container every day either. There is no need to pack up the apartment before cleaning. So this is the machine I've been dreaming about for 4-5-6 years.

It knows everything, the Narwal Freo Z Ultra is a real ROBOT vacuum cleaner in every way! If you can afford it, have a frame for it and want the best, then you want the Narwal Freo Z Ultra!
