Series production of the PlayStation 3 has begun
Asustek Computer has recently started series production of Sony’s latest gaming console.
So far, only small-scale production has started, but the agreement between the two companies requires Asust to deliver 11 million units by the November 4 premiere of the console. Currently, Taiwanese suppliers provide enough components to assemble 200 gaming machines a month, but that number is growing, so much so that it is expected to be five times that from September.
The PlayStation 3 will later be mass-produced by a company called Hon Hai Precision Industry, which will be able to make up for any inventory shortages following its debut with its production. Of course, it is highly questionable whether this will be necessary at all. The intricacies surrounding the PS3, the constant slips, the Xbox 360, which has been on the market for a long time, and the promising Nintendo Wii, which is much cheaper than the competition, could pretty much dampen future sales figures for Sony’s product.
