They found the first virus written for Google’s popular operating system.

Kaspersky Lab has announced that it has discovered the first virus on Google's operating system, Android. According to the report, the exact name of the virus is Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer. The trojan is said to have infected several devices.

The size of the virus is 13 Kb, and in operation it disguises itself as a media player and then unobtrusively sends SMS messages to premium rate numbers, thus greatly increasing the account of the unsuspecting device owner.

The company says Android users are under increasing threat as Google’s system is one of the fastest-growing operating systems, making it a potential target for virus developers. Kaspersky Lab has also announced its own antivirus application for Android, which will be available from 2011. In the meantime, it advises users to be very careful which application they give access to the device, as anyone can easily fall victim to a scam.
