Contrary to preliminary plans, LG will not yet have a hybrid desktop player that would handle both Blu-ray and HD-DVD standards.
The South Korean company also planned in March that the market launch of the BD199 desktop player would be delayed and instead they would work on developing a hybrid device that handles both formats. With this solution, companies that support both Blu-ray and HD-DVD standards would have expanded their small headcount, but as they stand now, they would rather return to using the Sony format exclusively in their devices.

One of its main rivals, Samsung is still planning on hybrid unit, despite the fact that Philips and Sharp are in addition a member controlled by Sony consortium, Respectively as the world first introduced its desktop Blu-ray player.
