Until yesterday, Apple did not specifically recommend the use of chemicals and detergents to clean product displays. Why? The company feared that particularly aggressive liquids could damage the oleophobic coating on the screen.

From today, everything will change. Following concerns about the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, Cupertino decided to update its support page, and explains that disinfectants can be used without problems to properly clean Apple products.

“With a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox disinfectant wipe, you can gently clean hard, non-porous surfaces of your Apple product, such as the display, keyboard, or other external surfaces. Do not bleach. Avoid getting moisture in the openings, and do not immerse your Apple product in cleaning agents. Do not use on fabric or skin. "

The disinfectants that Apple is now proposing are the same products recommended by doctors and experts to effectively prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Another smartphone maker, Google, points out that “normal household soap or a standard cleaning cloth” can be used to clean the screen.

It is important to turn off the device before cleaning. Also, be careful not to spill liquids into the charging port or other places, such as the speaker grilles. Do not use paper towels or other products that may scratch the screen. Also, avoid spraying detergents directly on the device. The best solution is to use isopropyl alcohol. Apply a small amount to a soft microfiber cloth and then wipe the device. If you don’t have a microfiber cloth, buy one that won’t cost muchbut if you don’t buy one yet, a clean t-shirt will also be appropriate. Avoid spraying directly on the phone display. You should also avoid paper towels as they can cause minor scratches or wear. Wash your hands after cleaning the phone.
