Introduction, or what is this article about?

I don't know why this is the title of my introductions these days, because everyone knows what the article is about, it's right there in the title. Yes, it's about a coffee grinder called HiBREW G2, which on paper looks like a great device, but I almost fell for it during the test, but I ended up loving it.

Well, this test was the result of a creative process full of real ups and downs, I hope I will successfully convey the reasons, read on!

HiBREW G2 unboxing and exterior

As usual, I made the mistake of not checking what the manufacturer sent for testing. When I contacted them about this machine, I confirmed that HiBREW=coffee brewing, HiBREW G2=coffee grinder.

When I unpacked it, I noticed something was wrong, because first I got a screw-on plastic lid, and then a screw-on plexiglass cup. This is no joke – I thought, because I realized that this would not only grind my avocado, but I could also use it to make a smoothie.

Well, that's when I took out the description, which revealed that there was a third function, but more on that later...

The machine looks like a typical coffee grinder from the outside, fortunately. I've had the chance to use one like this (almost like this) in the past century, as I trained as a household appliance repairman in my old age, so I've repaired quite a few coffee grinders. True, they were mostly products of the German Democratic Republic and the Hungarian People's Republic.

The point is that the motor part is at the bottom, and the grinder or blender attachment is at the top, depending on what we want to do with the machine.

There's a power button on the front, a USB Type-C connector on the back, and that's about it. It's also worth mentioning the color of the machine, which is really good during the current war emergency, but it would be even better if the poison green plastic had some camouflage pattern so we could hide it better in the grass.

Let's see the specification!

HiBREW G2 – this is the paper form

Let's start with what you might already guess from the Type-C connector, this machine is indeed battery-powered and can be charged via USB. This is a very honest thing, although I have had bad experiences with cheap battery-powered blenders, which were discharged after about one and a half smoothies. This will not happen, the 2000 mAh battery allows you to grind several doses of coffee and make smoothies.

Inside the machine, of course, we also find a motor, it is most likely brushless, its speed is 18 per minute, its torque is 000 Nm and its maximum power is 422 watts. As a home appliance repairman, I dare say that these are very impressive figures, I still remember what the aforementioned socialist machines were capable of. Well, a little less than that.

The specifications are about that. Of course, I could also describe that the grinder blade and the blender blade are stainless steel, and the like, but I don't think anyone is interested in these, they just repeat the words of the factory specifications.

Usage is much more important!

Well, the thing is, the machine has a safety lock (switch), so you'll have a hard time grinding your fingers. When the safety switch clicks into place, the machine gratefully blinks twice. That is, the power button flashes blue twice.

"Look how cute he is, he winked at me!"

If you want to turn it on, but the safety mechanism is not active, it will still flash twice, but then with a red light. It will also flash red if it is discharged, but in this case we will be rewarded with five flashes. As it turned out during the test, the five flashes also work if the knife gets stuck (this drove me crazy), but more on that later. So you can turn it on after the blue flash, but only if you press the power button twice in quick succession. This means that an accidental press will not start it.

So the point is:

  • We get more features
  • The engine is strong.
  • There is a safety switch and a safety start
  • The knife is stainless (what else could it be?)

HiBREW G2 – Usage and experiences

You might not be surprised, but the first thing I tried was grinding coffee, because the HiBREW H10 Plus coffee maker was also on the test, so it was really nice to have something to grind. And, the thing is, this coffee grinding was almost the end of the test, because I almost broke the whole thing into pieces as it is.

Well, what happened?

I measured out 19 grams of coffee beans for the double espresso, filled the grinder, turned it on, the machine beeped twice and stopped.

Ok, no problem, the red indicator light is flashing, five flashes, so I didn't charge it. I plugged it in to the charger, I still had something to write about. After about 2 hours, I tried again, the result was the same, one beep, five flashes.

What the hell is the battery?

Another two hours of charging, another test, the result is the same. Well, this is where I started to get a little nervous! But then I realized that the top of the coffee grinder doesn't always press the safety latch properly. Okay, so here's the cause of the error, it's not the battery that's bad!!!!! Hallelujah, the test is over.

I've tried everything, but it doesn't work. If there's no coffee in it, it works, if there's coffee in it, it doesn't work.

Of course I didn't give up, and the problem was solved. What happened was that the blade shaft wasn't properly spaced during assembly, and when I turned it on, it rose. The coffee bean got stuck under the blade because it rose, which caused the thing to get stuck. That's when I realized that the five flashes don't just indicate a low battery.

I took the machine apart and saw that the clutch had licked the plastic at the bottom, meaning it was not only stuck at the blade, but also at the bottom of the clutch. The solution was to install a small 2-cent washer to prevent the blade from rising.

Miraculously, this tiny component fixed the problem and the test could begin!

After I repaired the machine, I had no complaints about it! The manufacturer says that you need to grind for about forty seconds if you want to make a long coffee (Americano, paper filter) and 80 seconds if you want to make an espresso. I found the product under 80 seconds to be a bit rough for my taste, but that's a matter of taste.

I really like that the machine comes with a plastic insert. You can put this in when you're grinding enough beans for a single cup of coffee, the manufacturer says it prevents the grounds from smearing, making the end result more uniform.

I found that when I inserted the attachment, all the ground coffee got smeared into the space between the attachment and the inner wall of the coffee grinder, so the effect was exactly the opposite of what it was designed to do.

If you listen to me, regardless of the amount of coffee, shake and rotate the grinder a little while it's in operation, and the result will be good!

This plastic element has another function, but it's great for that! You can pour the ground coffee into the portafilter quite neatly by turning it upside down, only a little goes to the side. It's much easier this way than messing around with a spoon.

So overall, the grinding was impeccable after the repair!

Making a smoothie isn't magic either. I've made several varieties, but my favorite is definitely the apple banana combo with a very small amount of sugar.

The point is to put the plastic cup in place, turn the machine on first, then slowly turn it back on so that the blade starts to incorporate the ingredients. The end result will be a perfectly creamy, frothy smoothie, which you can then enjoy “warm” or chilled in the fridge. Be aware that the color of the stuff changes over time due to oxidation, so the nice, white frothy drink can turn into an ugly brown, frothless (but still tasty) drink over time.

The third mode remains, and that is making ice porridge. There is no big trick here, just put the ice cube in the cup, pour a little syrup or add some fruit, turn on the machine, and just like in the case of a smoothie, slowly turn the whole thing over so that the knife starts working. The end result will be awesome here too!

I can give you some advice for the ice cream: don't put in too many large cubes, it's better to crush the ice a little in a nylon bag. Not because it can't handle the big cubes, but because if there's a lot of ice in the glass, the big cubes stay on top and aren't crushed by the knife.

HiBREW G2 – the conclusion

Well, I think you can see why this test was a real challenge. Of course, it ended well, that's the point, but it's not very encouraging that I'm getting a product to test like this. I'm almost certain that it must have been an isolated problem, because I haven't read anywhere on the internet that anyone has complained about something like this. However, I thought it was important to write it down in case it could be a "lifesaver" for someone.

The HiBREW G2 is a great machine by the way. Compared to a battery-powered one, it's insanely powerful. As I wrote above, I've tried a machine like this before, but I shouldn't have. That was a pain. However, with the G2, no one will have any problems because of its strength.

The battery life, or in other words, the cordlessness, is great, as we can take it with us even when traveling or camping and make delicious smoothies for ourselves even while hiking. Cleaning the machine is not dangerous either, with a little exaggeration it can be washed with running water. Maybe the only thing that is a bit trickier is wiping it, but that's not too bad either.
