Introduction, or what is this article about?

In recent years, gamers have been paying more and more attention to choosing the right peripherals, especially controllers. GameSir, a Chinese company that has been around since 2013, has consistently proven that it can compete with the bigger manufacturers, and they have once again set the bar high with their Cyclone 2 controller.

The game controller market has long been dominated by Xbox and PlayStation controllers, but in recent years, more and more independent manufacturers have emerged with innovative solutions. The GameSir Cyclone 2 is based on the ergonomics of the Xbox controller, but it contains several technological innovations that make it worth considering.

In terms of precision, the Cyclone 2 uses so-called TMR (Tunnel Magneto Resistance) technology instead of traditional Hall-effect solutions. This not only allows for more precise control, but also significantly reduces the chance of stick drift, one of the most common problems with controllers.

We also find forward-thinking solutions in the field of wireless technologies: the controller supports three connection methods (2.4GHz, Bluetooth, wired), and the 1000Hz sampling frequency ensures that every move we make is instantly reflected in the game.

Cross-platform compatibility is also key: Cyclone 2 works on PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android devices. This is especially important for those who play on multiple platforms, as they don't have to buy multiple controllers.

The aesthetic appeal is also worth mentioning: the controller is available in two color options (Shadow Black and Phantom White), both with a partially transparent housing and customizable RGB lighting. The included aluminum charging stand is not only a practical accessory, but also adds a stylish look to your desk.

Priced at $49.99/$55.99 (without/with charging stand), the GameSir Cyclone 2 offers a competitive alternative to premium controllers while providing features often found only in much more expensive models.

GameSir Cyclone 2 is the perfect blend of form and function

At first glance, the Cyclone 2 resembles the familiar design of the Xbox Series X/S controllers, but there are a number of unique features. With a weight of 229 grams, it feels solid enough to be comfortable even during long gaming sessions. The controller is available in two color options: the more girly Phantom White version with gold and orange accessories, while the more boyish Shadow Black version offers a more subdued look.

The grips have a special textured surface that is not only aesthetic but also functional: the laser-engraved pattern effectively prevents the controller from slipping even during long gaming sessions. Thanks to the semi-transparent design, the RGB lighting located in the housing gives the device a unique look, especially in the grip area.

The layout of the controls is logical and well thought out. The ABXY buttons use mechanical microswitches, which provide a firm, clicky feedback. The D-pad also has a microswitch design, with full separation, so accidental cross-entry cannot occur. In the middle is the power button with the GameSir logo, surrounded by an LED ring to indicate the connection status.

The analog sticks use TMR technology, with friction-reducing rings around the metal shafts. The tops of the sticks are replaceable, although additional caps are not included in the basic package. The triggers are made of transparent plastic, and as a unique solution, there is a physical switch on both triggers that allows you to switch between analog and “hair trigger” mode.

On the back of the controller, there are two programmable buttons, which are positioned naturally under the middle fingers. On the top is a USB-C port for wired connection and charging, while on the bottom is a 3,5mm jack for the headset. The back of the controller also has mobile phone holder attachment points, although the holder can be purchased separately.

The optional aluminum charging stand features a Y-shaped design that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also provides a stable hold. The stand features a USB-C port on the back and a USB-A port on the front for the wireless adapter. The controller automatically starts charging when placed on the stand, and LEDs indicate the charging status.

The 1-meter USB-C cable included in the package is not very long and is not braided, but this is not a major disadvantage given the wireless use and the optional charging stand. The dimensions of the Cyclone 2 meet the industry standard, ensuring a comfortable grip for gamers with both small and large hands.

GameSir Cyclone 2 Tracks: When Technology Meets Gaming Experience

The first technical specification of the Cyclone 2 is the analog sticks equipped with TMR (Tunnel Magneto Resistance) technology. This solution has 4096 sampling points and 12-bit resolution, which significantly exceeds the accuracy of traditional Hall-effect sticks. Another advantage of the technology is lower power consumption and the almost complete elimination of the stick drift phenomenon.

When it comes to connectivity, the Cyclone 2 offers three options: 2,4GHz wireless with a dedicated adapter, Bluetooth, and wired connectivity via USB-C. It offers a 1000Hz sampling rate in both wireless and wired modes, resulting in professional-grade response times.

The device is highly compatible with PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android platforms. Switching between different platforms is possible thanks to four different input modes: DS4 (DualShock 4), XInput, NS (Nintendo Switch) and HID modes, which can be switched between with simple button combinations.

The built-in 860 mAh battery provides approximately 8 hours of continuous gaming time with RGB lighting on. Power management is aided by the auto-off function and the sampling frequency adjustment. Charging can be done directly via a USB-C cable or on the included aluminum charging stand, which also provides automatic on and off.

The controller is highly programmable: four different profiles can be stored directly on the device. Through the GameSir Connect software, you can fine-tune the backlash of the levers, the sensitivity of the triggers, the intensity of the vibration motors, and the colors and effects of the RGB lighting. The two rear programmable buttons can even execute macros and keyboard combinations.

Precision control is further enhanced by the presence of a 6-axis gyroscope, which enables motion control functions in supported games. Vibration feedback is provided by two asymmetrical motors, the intensity of which can be adjusted separately. The ABXY buttons and D-pad, equipped with mechanical microswitches, require low actuation force and short travel, which allows for fast reaction times.

The unique design of the triggers allows switching between analog Hall-effect operation and microswitch “hair trigger” mode. In the latter case, the trigger movement can be physically limited with a switch, thus achieving instant actuation, which is especially beneficial in FPS games.

The digital brain of GameSir Cyclone 2: The possibilities offered by Connect software

The core of the GameSir Cyclone 2’s customization is the GameSir Connect software, available for Windows platforms from the Microsoft Store. The program features a user-friendly interface, where all settings are logically grouped and easily accessible. The mobile version of the software is also available for iOS and Android platforms, although their functionality is somewhat more limited compared to the desktop version.

We tested: GameSir Cyclone 2 game controller - It can do everything and more! 10

One of the most important functions of the Connect software is the calibration and fine-tuning of the analog sticks. Users can adjust the dead zone of the sticks in detail, adjust the sensitivity curves, and activate the “Zero Dead Zone” mode for maximum precision. The program shows the movement and position of the sticks in real time, making it easy to make precise adjustments.

The triggers have separate sensitivity settings for analog and hair trigger modes. The software allows you to customize the trigger’s operating characteristics and fine-tune the trigger stop position. The intensity of the asymmetric vibration motors can also be individually calibrated, even with different settings for each game.

The RGB lighting is also controlled via the Connect software. The color and brightness of the four separate lighting zones can be individually adjusted, and you can choose from predefined lighting effects such as “Flow”, “Rainbow” or “Pulse”. The speed and transition mode of the lighting effects can also be customized.

The programmable buttons are extremely flexible: the two rear buttons can be programmed to any keyboard combination, mouse button or macro. The software allows you to record and edit complex macros, as well as set timings. Each configuration can be saved to one of the controller's four internal profiles, which can be switched between later directly on the controller.

GameSir Cyclone 2 in action: Two weeks of experience

When I first picked up the Cyclone 2, I immediately noticed how good the textured grip was. This proved to be especially beneficial during longer gaming sessions, as I was able to hold the device steadily even with sweaty palms. The controller's 229 grams weight strikes a nice balance between a solid feel and comfortable use, giving me that typical "there's material in it" feel, but it didn't tear my hand off.

The performance of the TMR analog sticks is truly impressive to the touch, although I obviously couldn't measure them. The sticks respond to even the slightest touch. I reduced the default 10% internal dead zone to 5%, which always resulted in stable operation.

The wireless connection is also convincing in terms of feel, but I looked online for more accurate measurements. I found them, and they confirmed my subjective feelings. The joystick tester indeed showed the promised 1000 Hz sampling. The average outlier value between 0-6 measured during Xinputtest, as well as the extremely low latency and jitter, show that the controller offers competitive performance. According to the Stick Analyzer tests, there is minimal filtering on the analog sticks, which was also supported by the 240fps slow-motion recordings.

Coming back to my own experience, using the mechanical ABXY buttons and the D-pad gave me a bit of a mixed bag. I really liked the firm, clicky feedback of the buttons, but I found that the A button sometimes rubbed against the plastic housing, which slightly spoiled the experience. However, the complete separation of the D-pad worked perfectly, and I didn't experience any accidental cross-directional inputs.

The “hair trigger” mode of the triggers is particularly useful in FPS games, and the vibration feedback is sufficiently powerful thanks to the asymmetrical motors, although not as finely nuanced as, for example, that of the DualSense controller.

The customization options in the Connect software are very good. Switching between four profiles is easy, and all settings are stored directly on the controller. The detailed fine-tuning options for the sticks and triggers allowed me to optimize the controller for different play styles. The customization of the RGB lighting is more of an aesthetic addition, but the brightness is subdued enough not to be distracting.

I think the battery performance is more average than good. With the RGB lighting on, the Gamesir Cyclone 8 provides about 2 hours of playtime, which is not outstanding, but if you buy the charging stand, it will probably be a good solution to never run out of power while playing.

During the game tests, I tried the controller on different platforms, but I have to say right now, I don't have a console at home, not of any kind. I have to mention that even if I had a console, I'm not sure I would have been able to use the controller, because its compatibility limitations (no Xbox and PlayStation support) significantly narrow the range of potential users. The only other thing that can be used is the Nintendo Switch, but I don't have a Nintendo at all, and I never have.

I didn't buy it for that reason, but specifically for projector tests and, of course, for games. So, as a second option, I tried it on the PC as well. Using the 2.4GHz adapter was problem-free, the connection was established immediately and remained stable. Bluetooth pairing on an Android phone or Android projector also worked smoothly, although I sometimes experienced minimal input lag due to the wireless connection, but that's perhaps understandable. Fortunately (or not), I'm not a hardcore gamer who would have been bothered by this little lag.

I found the PC version of the GameSir Connect software to be comprehensive enough, although the user interface is a bit opaque (there are an awful lot of settings). The mobile app, on the other hand, is less sophisticated but more transparent, and performs the basic functions reliably. Installing firmware updates was hassle-free, although it required connecting both the controller and the adapter.

If I had to mention a game that I tried on Android, I would probably say the mobile version of Real Racing 3. In this game, the fine controllability of the analog triggers allowed for precise acceleration and braking, so I got a pretty good gaming experience.

The placement of the programmable buttons on the back felt natural, although I did sometimes accidentally press them when holding the controller, but this has happened to me with other controllers as well, maybe it's just me being lazy. The functions assigned to the buttons were activated immediately, I didn't experience any lag. The turbo function was also easy to set up and use, although I tried it more for testing purposes.

The overall build quality is impressive, and the controller feels reasonably durable. During the two-week test period, I didn't experience any quality degradation or mechanical issues, except for the occasional rubbing of the previously mentioned A button. The quality of the plastics used is good, and there are no cheap or fragile parts in the construction.

The controller's heat generation is barely noticeable even during longer gaming sessions. I didn't experience excessive heating when the vibration motors were in operation either. The brightness of the RGB lighting is pleasant, not distracting, but a bit unnecessary for me, but the internal lighting visible through the transparent casing creates a distinctly aesthetic effect.

The 3,5mm headset jack was easy to use, and the sound quality and microphone performance were as expected. Volume control and microphone mute were easy to use with the controller buttons.

What's especially appreciated when using it across platforms is that the controller automatically recognizes and remembers previously paired devices. For example, when I switched from PC to mobile, I just pressed the right button combination and the controller connected instantly. This kind of flexibility is especially useful for those who play on multiple platforms.

We tested: GameSir Cyclone 2 game controller - It can do everything and more! 22

The ergonomics of the controller hold up well even during long-term use. I didn't experience any hand fatigue or discomfort even after 2-3 hours of continuous gaming, and I didn't have time for longer games. The texture of the grip didn't become uncomfortable or irritating even after long periods of use, which is a common problem with other controllers.

Although the gyroscope functions work well, I experienced some limitations when using it on PC. The gyroscope does not work in Xinput mode, so you have to switch to DS4 or NS mode. This may cause some inconvenience for those who regularly use motion control functions on PC.

We tested: GameSir Cyclone 2 game controller - It can do everything and more! 23

It's outstanding value for money, offering features for under $60 that other manufacturers only offer in the $150-200 price range. Based on the build quality and feature richness, the Cyclone 2 easily competes with its more expensive competitors.

The GameSir Cyclone 2 – When Value Meets Innovation

During the two-week test period, the GameSir Cyclone 2 proved to be a worthy challenger to premium controllers. The device's greatest strength is that it managed to find a balance between high-end technology and an affordable price.

The analog sticks equipped with TMR technology provide precise and reliable control, while the mechanical buttons and customizable triggers provide a premium gaming experience. The build quality and materials are impressive, although there are some minor ergonomic compromises.
