We tested the Bulldozer: FX-8150 and three 990FX motherboards on the test bench

Introduction 1999. June 23 A nice, quiet, simple summer day, but a significant one for a processor manufacturing company in Sunnyvale. AMD K7, i.e. AMD Athlon seventh generation x86 type processors, was presented at this time. We would only provide one piece of data in this regard: 12 years, 3 months and 19 days. The crease-stitched variants of the K7 architecture were in a decisive role for so long and we had to wait so long for AMD's next big launch. Obviously, towards the end of this period, the company's smile was not sincere, but at the same time, it is a good example of how long the lifespan of a well-executed processor architecture can be extended. The glorious past In recent years, AMD's biggest problem was that compared to its competitors, chips with a significantly larger silicon area had to be sold at a lower price, which is an acceptable solution in the short term, but in the long term it strongly affects the expected profit. Knowing this, the engineers started the development of the Bulldozer micro-architecture roughly 4-5 years ago. Although the base area of technologically leading FX central units can still be said to be relatively large, - the official figure is 315 square millimeters - Intel's Sandy Bridge-E chip significantly exceeded even this. The transistor density of the chip is quite high, the chip contains slightly more than two billion transistors! An interesting development occurred during the birth of this article. IT magazine PC Games Hardware reported that server processors based on Orochi chips contain "only" 1,2 billion transistors. Nothing explains the huge difference, that is. AMD initially advertised poor value for the Bulldozer architecture. He actually only gave an approximate value, but it is obvious that he could not have been so wrong. The marketing machine that has worked so well in recent times has failed for the second time. At the beginning of the year, there were even reports that the new FX processors would squeeze the Core i7-980X model as well. Even an "accidental error" confirms how prepared they are to grind the six-core cannon. It was like that... ... and that's how it turned out. On the day of the launch, as usual, the company launched the new series with a visual video. Head-to-head with Intel's flagship, the Core i7-980X, and under Cinebench R11.5, AMD still has a significant advantage. The rival's solution reached 5,41 points, while the FX-8150 climbed up to 5,98 points. The skew is obvious to the uninitiated eye. After the hype that followed the start died down, the video became a thing of the past, but after a little correction, it reappeared on the YouTube channel of the processor manufacturer. The score remained at 5,41, but this was now achieved by the Intel Core i5 2500K. Technology The wafers are made on GlobalFoundries' 32 nm SHP node. In Bulldozers, the previously introduced SOI has been combined with the HKMG (High-K Metal Gate) used by Intel, which can help overcome leakage current. The architecture has been designed to achieve high clock speeds ("Speed racer"), thanks to which the model range will probably be completely devoid of products below 3 GHz. All central units are, in the old language, Black Edition, which is why it is not marked separately. At this point, let's take a detour and examine the other side of the coin. The fastest quad-core Phenom II processor ticks at 3,7 GHz, and the 1100T based on a six-core Thuban chip ticks at 3,3 GHz. Compared to this, the base clock of the 32nm AMD FX-8150 is almost disappointingly low and only the 4,2 GHz "level" of the Turbo Core is acceptable, which immediately promises a 10-15% performance increase. A year ago, XbitLabs announced that Bulldozer would exceed the 3,5 GHz clock rate, which did come true, but only just barely, despite the series of slippages. It seems correct to assume that there are still serious problems with the production and delivery of the new cannon, and this has a significant impact on performance. The second integer only increases the size of the module by 12 percent. Based on many years of experience, a basic concept was also born, which was based on the following: on average, central units perform fixed-point operations at a rate of over 80 percent. It can be seen from this that floating-point calculations are present to a much lesser extent in the lives of "centipedes". In the design, they consequently connected two integer cores, which have their own first-level cache, but must share the second-level temporary storage and the floating-point unit. AMD named the unit formed in this way a module. A module According to internal measurements, the second integer basically increases the size of the module to an insignificant extent, on the other hand - in the ideal case - it can cause a performance increase of up to 80 %. The part of the primary cache responsible for data is directly connected to the processors (its size is 16 Kbytes, its delay is 4 clock signals), but the 64 Kbyte cache designed for storing instructions is already divided among the integers. Digging deeper Based on the test results, the L1 data cache is not only too small, but also slow, which is not a very good combination. The size of the second-level storage shared within the module is satisfactory, but its delay is high, 25-27 cycles. It is easy to imagine that a larger L1 cache and a faster L2 (12-15 cycles) would improve the performance of the processor by 10-20%. Not too surprisingly, accessing 8MB of L3 is also not lightning fast (65 cycles). In summary, we can say that Bulldozer's cache system will not be the eighth wonder of the world. In the maze of instruction sets Bulldozer currently has the widest instruction set support: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4A, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX, AES, FMA4, XOP, PCLMULQDQ and of course the 64-bit extension. Regarding the two novelties (FMA4, XOP), it can be said that FMA4 is of great importance in the HPC market, and XOP provides a small advantage under multimedia applications. We understand that the latest version of x264 already supports your new instruction sets. The outdated 3DNow! support has been terminated, I think this will not cause sleepless nights for many readers. It is known that Intel VTd is used to access x86 virtual memory. IOMMU significantly increases the virtualization performance of the system, but surprisingly, Intel's high-end solutions (Core i5-2600K, i7-2600K) do not support this technology, and this "black circle" also includes the current Sandy Bridge E solutions. Again, an extra service compared to its direct competitor, although its usefulness for an average user is questionable. Turbo Core in theory Turbo Core has also improved, it works with more clock gates and is even better adapted to different levels of utilization. If all cores are active, but the floating point units are not currently in use, the Turbo Core 2.0 clock will take effect. The process dynamically changes the clock signals of the cores depending on the load, the inactive resources, modules and the sub-assemblies within the module can be switched off, so the front of the house could not complain about this. Unfortunately, the software side of things really messes me up. The practical implementation The scheduler of Windows 7 does not perform task allocation in the most efficient way, to say the least, because it frequently alternates the allocation of tasks between cores. The next version of the operating system already fixes the problem and the fix for this system will be ready soon, so - in extreme cases it can be 15-25 percent - we will soon get 2-10% more performance. Another very pleasant benefit will be that the idle consumption can be reduced by 4-5 watts, because the modules can stay on "savings" for longer. "Don't look at performance as a gift" The "transformation" in Battlefield 3 Battlefield 3 also shows how much optimization can help a processor. In this game, the current most powerful FX series processor can reach the performance of Core i7-2600k. The FX series processors come with Socket AM3+ housing and are housed in AMD 9 series chipset motherboards. Orientation is also facilitated by the color of the socket, which is mostly black. To implement the infinitely sounding Scorpius platform, we need an FX series processor, a motherboard with a series 9 chipset, and a Radeon HD 6000 series video card. Bulldozer has a dual-channel DDR1866 memory controller supporting 3 MHz modules. AMD FX-8150 in the company of a Phenom II X4 970 BE - from above Finally, we would like to add one more interesting addition. The fact that the work performed per clock signal (instructions per cycle) by the Bulldozer-based processors has somewhat decreased on average compared to its predecessor caused serious debate. Some immediately envision the fall of architecture, others list similar examples from the past. In this regard, as always, let's stick to the facts. Nowadays, programmers are increasingly paying attention to the advantages of multi-core optimization. In the case of a fundamentally good 8-cylinder engine, we rarely think about what it can do with 1 cylinder. AMD FX-8150 in the company of a Phenom II X4 970 BE - from below The example is not the best, but perhaps it highlights the point. We do not claim that eight integer cores will be used optimally, but Turbo Core 2.0 aims for the highest possible clock signal (4,2 GHz) in this case. In the case of the K10.5, which is only available at the price of "bloody sweat", here it is considered a "basic watch". There is also no doubt that the implementation of AVX, FMA and XOP cost a significant amount of transistors. The basics of the architecture are used in several segments (server, desktop PC), so this seemed like a mandatory step, but nowadays we see even less of its advantages (especially in a desktop environment). Lying in bed Ideally (FMA4+AVX), the Bulldozer really feels in its element, it delivers surprising performance and immediately puts things in a different light. According to measurements by the German HT4U, under the C-Ray 1.1 rendering application, the AMD FX-8150 finishes in the same 15 seconds as the Intel Core i7 990X. That's exactly half the time it took an AMD Phenom II X6 1100T processor to complete the task. We would like to note in parentheses that we also measured the other extreme, the Super PI. Motherboards Under Bulldozer ASUS Sabertooth 990FX Within the ranks of ASUS, the TUF (The Ultimate Force) board family is perhaps even more special and special than the ROG series. When making TUF boards, tuning is not the priority (it is also perfectly suitable for standard functions), but we get the best in everything else. The primary goal is reliability and longevity. The first and most important condition for this is the use of quality components and materials. The components of TUF boards are "Military Class" certified. What it means? Crease-resistant performance in the harshest environments thanks to the use of robust TUF coils, solid-state capacitors and MOSFET components that meet independent partner-verified military-grade specifications. TUF coils, also known as metal alloy coils, are not made of ordinary iron, but of an alloy of various metals, so they can cope with a rated current of up to 25 A, which is 40 percent higher than the load capacity of a conventional component. And the one-piece housing eliminates the emission of vibrating sounds, which results in excellent characteristics and durability, even in extreme conditions. Of course, this is only one half of the coin, reliability also requires an adequate power supply. This is also done by Digi + VRM in the case of the Sabertooth 990FX, working with 8 + 2 phases. We have already heard a lot about this, but this is supplemented by the E.S.P. is. The E.S.P. Efficient Switching Power provides optimal power supply to key components. In the system that can only be found on this motherboard, a switching power supply provides power not only for the CPU, but also for the other key components (video card, LAN and USB 3.0). The E.S.P. significantly increases the efficiency of the system and reduces the heat produced. In addition to all this, ASUS also pays special attention to cooling in the case of TUF cards, and uses a special process containing ceramics. The ceramic coating of the CeraM!X heatsink coating technology provides a 50 percent larger surface area for heat dissipation. The innovative ceramic efficiently conducts heat away from the system. The ceramic used instead of the traditional antioxidant layer emits more heat thanks to its microscopic, irregular - and therefore larger - surface. Better cooling always contributes to better system stability. TUF Thermal Radar is responsible for control. TUF Thermal Radar monitors the temperature of critical parts of the motherboard in real time and automatically regulates the speed of the fans so that the system maintains excellent stability and does not overheat. A series of sensors are located next to many components of the motherboard, and it is even possible to monitor them individually. Thermal Radar automatically calculates ideal fan speeds based on the various parameters users enter for each component, keeping everything cooler and longer lasting. Although we usually don't attach much importance to the matter, electrostatic protection can also "save lives". The Sabertooth 990FX does not ignore this question either. ESD Guards are unique protection of motherboard components against unexpected electrostatic discharges (ESD). Electrostatic discharges happen lightning fast, and their effects are often underestimated. ASUS exclusive anti-charge chip, protection circuits and I/O backplate offer 4 times better protection to extend component life. According to the information in the above paragraphs, it is not surprising that ASUS offers a 5-year warranty on the motherboards found in the TUF family. This model also uses the frames given by the ATX standard and has a size of 30,5 × 24,4 cm, the color of the printed circuit board is the usual black. The area around the AM3+ socket is quite airy and orderly, the rib system extends beyond the power supply to the 990FX north bridge with the help of a heat pipe. In addition to black, green and brown are the predominant colors on the sheet, thus providing a kind of military style to the product. We find the usual four DIMMs next to the socket, with DDR3 and dual channel support. In terms of capacity, the limit is 32 GB, and the clock signal is 1866 MHz. The power supply for this model is solved with a 24-pin and an 8-pin power connector. Underneath the RAM slots is the SB950 south bridge, with a genuine TUF rib on it. The situation in the management of backup storage is the same as for the M5A99X. AMD SB950 provides native SATA 6 Gb/s ports, six in number, which support RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 modes. A JMicron JMB362 controller was also added to the page, which offers its owner two additional SATA ports, a Power eSATA and an eSATA. Each port is capable of 3 Gb/s. The Sabertooth 990FX will not be a bottleneck for its owner in terms of expansion rails either. We get no less than four full-width PCI Express slots, of which the black one is limited to ×4 mode. It can also be safely used for the three brown video cards, they can work in ×16/×16 for two VGA systems, and ×16/×8/×8 when three controllers are used, whether it is CrossFireX or SLI. We get a piece of short, ×1 PCI Express, just like the old PCI bus. There will be no shortage of USB ports either, the SB950 provides 14 2.0 ports (ten of which are on the back panel and four as pin terminals on the PCB). In connection with USB 3.0, the already mentioned ASMedia controller for the M5A99X EVO returns, with four connectors on the back and two pin terminals on the PCB. LAN works with a Realtek 8111E, audio with a Realtek ALC 892 8-channel card. Crosshair V Formula (and Crosshair V Formula ThunderBolt) tries to carry on this beautiful tradition. The new ROG board naturally received the latest and best of everything currently available. AMD 990FX north bridge, SB950 south bridge, AM3+ socket. It awaits Bulldozer with open arms, but is also willing to work with previous models up to the AM3 socket. In its case, the power supply is provided by the Extreme Engine Digi+ VRM, with 8 + 2 phases. Needless to say, the design and style of the ATX standard, 30,5 x 24,4 cm printed circuit board follow the usual ROG recipe in its entirety, true to the material and finish of the fins, the use of colors and unique ROG features. In addition to the AM3+ socket, a densely laminated black rib runs along the 990FX chip and the VRM area, with a heat pipe connection. DDR3 modules can work in two-channel mode in the four DIMM slots, with a maximum total capacity of 32 GB and a speed of 2133 MHz. Below the RAM sockets lies the south bridge, which is topped by a flattened, ROG design rib. The advantage of the 990FX north bridge can also be seen in the Crosshair V Formula, for which we have to look at the area of expansion rails. This model also has a total of four full-width PCI Express rails. This allows the simultaneous use of up to four video cards (Quad SLI and Quad CFX), but since the fourth slot can only work in ×4 mode, this can be a limiting factor for the card. The specifications therefore officially include Tri-SLI and 3-way CrossFireX, the three rails can operate in the following modes: ×16/×16 or ×16/×8/×8. A short, ×1 PCI Express and a PCI slot have also been added to the latest Crosshair. It is certain that with a sufficiently tuned Bulldozer and a brutal 3D subsystem, this motherboard will have a chance to break records. In relation to the SATA ports, we can practically quote verbatim what was described for the other two boards: The AMD SB950 provides native SATA 6 Gb/s ports, six in number, which support RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 modes. A JMicron JMB362 controller was also added to the page, which offers its owner two additional SATA ports, a Power eSATA and an eSATA. Each port is capable of 3 Gb/s. The network controller for the Crosshair V Formula is no longer a Realtek solution, but an Intel solution, and the sound generator is also a much more robust example in the form of the Supreme FX X-FI 2 8-channel controller, with the support of many Creative services. According to legend, the SupremeFX X-Fi 2 gives games amazing sounds - the dream of every ROG fan. EAX 5.0 and OpenAL ensure realistic, cinema-like sounds. THX TruStudio Pro branding guarantees that games, music and movies sound even better. The SupremeFX X-Fi 2 uses gold-plated connectors and high-quality capacitors to offer the best quality. We already noted that the SB950 only provides USB 2.0 ports, in this case 12 (8 of which are on the back, 1 reserved for ROG Connect). Of course, the Crosshair V Formula couldn't afford not to carry some of the newer standards as well, which is why the good old ASMedia controller came along, offering six USB 3.0 ports, four of which are on the back. Here is the rear structure and connectors of the Crosshair V Formula: In addition to what has been described so far, of course there is much more to be written, for example about the exclusive ROG "features", but since we have had quite a few ROG models in recent times, and we have covered these features in detail more than once, that is why we will not do this again, but summarize. As the name suggests, it is of course an AMD 990FX/SB950-based solution, and the GD80 is intended to indicate the highest equipment and the best technical implementation. The printed circuit, which fits into the slots of the ATX standard, is 30,5 cm long and 24,4 cm wide, so installing it in a normal ATX box is no problem. Nowadays, it has become almost common for manufacturers to build on black PCBs from the mid-range upwards, and this is no different in the case of the 990FXA-GD80. Of course, this doesn't have too much practical significance, but it gives the eye a nice, sophisticated look, especially with the addition of details. The power is supplied with the usual 24-pin and 8-pin additional power connector. Around the AM3+ socket -- which accommodates AMD FX, Phenom II X6/X4/X3/X2, Athlon II X4/X3/X2 and Sempron CPU processors -- we find the power supply section, in connection with which four things are worth mentioning. The first is that the board works with a 10+2 phase power supply. The second is the so-called Active Phase Switching technology. It is not difficult to translate, this means active phase switching, which in practice means that the unused phases and the components connected to them are switched off when they are not used, in Hungarian, the switching of the phases takes place according to the load. This is not a new thing, we have already encountered something similar elsewhere, but it is important to point out that at MSI it is not a software solution, the control is completely automatic, hardware-based, and is done by a special IC chip. This is not useless, because it increases the efficiency, and since the consumption decreases with its use, it also results in savings in the long term (the blue led line next to the socket on the motherboard informs about the current load and the number of phases in use). The third thing is DrMOS. Anyone who is familiar with MSI's motherboards has surely come across DrMOS, as the company has been using this solution on its motherboards for quite some time, going all the way back to the P45. DrMOS is a power supply component, short for Driver-MOSFET. The essence of the technology is that the driver IC required for control, as well as the upper and lower MOSFETs, are placed in a single chip, in a case. One of its important virtues is the increase in the switching frequency, which, according to the manufacturer's data, means four times the speed compared to the traditional MOSFET, which results in a significant improvement in the stability of the voltage regulation. It maintains its stability and efficiency not only in general conditions, but also during hard tuning. The fourth thing is Military Class II, which deserves a little more words and applies not only to the PWM area, but to the entire motherboard. In the few paragraphs above, you can also read about a motherboard that was built on components that also meet military standards. In the case of MSI, it is practically the same. Military Class II, as the name suggests, is already the second revision, but the essence lies in the details, i.e. in the components. Hi-c CAP The soul of Hi-c capacitors is tantalum (tantalum), which is element number 73 of the periodic table and is quite a rare, gray-white, shiny metal. Its melting point is very high, 3017 °C. Due to its high chemical resistance, chemical devices and electrodes are made from tantalum. It is used to make dental drills, analytical balance weights, X-ray tube cathodes, and fountain pen nibs. Since it fits well next to tissues, it is used to make aids that stay in the body, for example supporting bones. They are also widely used mainly for capacitors of mobile phones and other electronic equipment, as shown in the attached figure. Thanks to this, the Hi-c capacitor has an estimated eight times longer service life than a conventional solid electrolyte capacitor. SFC The SFC (Super Ferrite Choke) covers a specially designed iron core coil. The coil contains an iron core whose permeability has been significantly increased. Compared to conventional coils, SFC works at a temperature 35 °C lower. Of course, this also has a small positive effect on heat production and stability. Solid CAP The Solid CAP, or solid electrolyte capacitor, is the starting point of the Military Class series. These models absolutely do not contain traditional electrolytic capacitors, all units are at least Solid CAP, but where necessary, Hi-c capacitors are added. This way, we no longer have to worry about exploding or bulging capacitors, these types of capacitors fail in very few cases, and their nominal lifespan is 10 years. From these components, Military Class II is formed, and in the package we also find a certificate that guarantees the authenticity of these parameters. A thick, nickel-plated aluminum rib was placed in the PWM area, the connection is provided by a thick, flattened copper heat pipe with the rib on the northern bridge, which is also nickel-plated. Of course, a little attention-grabbing could fit on the ribs, on 1-1 blue plates we can read Military Class II and OC Genie II, which are two things that are the defining characteristics of today's MSI boards. The rib in the south, on the SB950 south bridge, is of the same material and style, but of course its shape is flattened so as not to prevent the installation of long video cards. On this we find the MSI branding. As is usually typical for ATX standard AM3+ boards, this model also has four DIMM sockets, which of course accept DDR3 modules up to 2133 MHz, with a maximum capacity of 32 GB. During use, dual-channel is supported. The colors also help distinguish the channels, one channel is marked in blue and the other in black. Let's look at the SATA section. On the edge of the PCB we find six ports rotated, all of which come from the SB950 south bridge and support the latest 3.0 standard. If we move easily to the opposite edge of the printed circuit board, we can also find the gigabit LAN controller, which is a Realtek 8111E copy, we have seen it many times, it is considered a popular chip. In the corner, we can also see a THX sticker, under which lies the audio controller, which is a Realtek ALC 892 chip, and this is not our first encounter with it either. It provides a maximum of 8 channels with jack detection, Azalia 1.0 and Vista Premium support. We are not left without things worth mentioning in the lower part of the motherboard, the most characteristic of which are the three physical control buttons. The functions of "reset" and "power" are clear, but OC Genie hides excitement. MSI 990FXA-GD80 has OC Genie II support. There are two ways to achieve this. One is the already mentioned button, pressing which results in a one-time and immediate tuning. Therefore, those who do not feel enough routine and courage for manual tuning can safely ask for the help of the OC Genie button. The other way is, of course, access through the BIOS. Speaking of BIOS, I'd like to interrupt the train of thought here. MSI also uses UEFI BIOS, i.e. the entire environment is graphics-based. MSI shaped this a little on its own face and gave its work the name Click BIOS. This model is already equipped with Click BIOS II. This resulted in a very simple and clear, transparent graphic interface, which can be controlled not only with a mouse, but also with a touch screen. The interface looks almost the same as under Windows, the individual operations can be performed even by dragging the mouse, using the "drag & drop" method. Of course, we get full access to all the capabilities of the motherboard, including monitoring and high-level tuning. OC Genie II functions can be accessed from Click BIOS II. At the bottom, in the remaining area, we find the pin terminals, with the USB in focus. The first one is marked in red, which means that the clips connected to this terminal have the Super Charger function. You can guess what this means, fast and easy charging of our devices, even when the machine is turned off. The other (black) is a simple USB 2.0 port. This model has four full-width PCI Express rails, so even the 4-way CFX can be installed. The first two slots can operate in ×16 mode, the third in ×8 mode, and the fourth in ×4 mode. In addition to the four "long" rails, we also get two short ones with ×1 speed, as well as a traditional PCI rail. A diagnostic display is located under the rib of the southern bridge, which consists of two seven-segment displays. Its task is usual, i.e. communicating possible errors with the help of error codes. We would have been relatively enthusiastic about tuning if we hadn't seen what we experienced with overdrive at one of our competitors. It reached 4600 MHz there. We also browsed through the experiences of several foreign sites, accordingly we turned off the energy management functions and the TDP limiter, but unfortunately we couldn't get any further, in fact. During the tuning, we only increased the multiplier, but even so we did not manage to make the system stable above 4515 MHz. Surprisingly, this was also only achieved by not increasing the voltage, but decreasing it, up to 1,375 V in the BIOS. Although we tried in vain with higher values, up to 1,41 V, the higher operating voltage always only resulted in instability. We should also add that the FX-8150 we visited is an early model, and we trust that the ones on store shelves will have more favorable characteristics. If we look at the numbers, we can see that the FX-8150 can't be called horroristic when it comes to hunger at its base clock, with power management functions on its side. In an unloaded state, it asked for the least, and even during Blu-ray playback it only consumed a few watts more than the two Sandy Bridge CPUs. During AIDA64, it showed more protein in its teeth and consumed the most energy among the field members, with a large difference compared to the Sandy Bridge models. In the case of Furmark, the situation was not so dire: although the FX-8150 consumed the most after the Phenom, the difference compared to the Sandy Bridges was 15-25 watts. It is better not to detail the tuned consumption data, we can clearly see what happens when we unchain the monster (turn off restrictions and energy management) and unleash its appetite. Heating: The heat production characteristics of the AMD FX-8150 were examined in the ASUS Crosshair V Formula tab: First, we performed the observation with basic settings, leaving all power management functions switched on. The FX-8150 CPU was loaded with AIDA64 for 30 minutes and then allowed to cool down. During the load, the total temperature of the processor rose to 59 degrees Celsius, while that of the cores rose to 48 degrees Celsius, which do not seem like unfriendly values, but it is already known that FX processors do not like high temperatures, up to 60 degrees can be said to work under suitable conditions . We managed to maintain this, but with a Scythe Ninja 2 Rev B, which certainly cannot be said to be an average and cheap cooling, so the question arises, what happens if we snap a few thousand HUF cooler on the FX-8150. Well, we don't know that, but it is possible that a problem could arise during a longer load affecting all cores. Seeing this, we were a little afraid to lower the load on the CPU in the tuned state, because we knew we wouldn't be able to fit into the limit. During the load, the temperature climbed up to 79, considering both the total value and the individual cores. This is already well beyond the recommended value, so if our cooling is not adequate, we should give up on long-term tuning rather than torture our unit. The problem is that the Ninja 2 Rev B is not a weak model, although it is not the top today, the latest products are not able to beat it by a huge margin, so we came to the conclusion that if you want an FX-8150 with permanent tuning to use, we would most likely need water cooling. AMD recognized this fact much earlier than us, which is probably why it decided to make the FX-8150 available in a package that includes a factory water cooling. The cheaper edition includes a heat pipe air cooling, so let's not cherish big dreams about the OC. Under the built-in measurements of AIDA64, the shape of the FX changes greatly for the various modules. Under Queen, it only has a chance against 2500K, it doesn't reach 2600K even with tuning. Photoworxx has no chance of squeezing the 2500K and 2600K, but surprisingly the FX-980 manages to handle the 8150X. During the Hash module, Bulldozer had a spectacular time and confidently beat all his opponents by a surprisingly wide margin. Under VP8, the situation is no longer so rosy, we managed to approach 2500K, but 2600K and 980X take a step back. The tuning, on the other hand, boosted things a lot, and AMD's new savior was at the head of the field. Even under FPU Julia, the most powerful Bulldozer doesn't excel, it only manages to deal with the Phenom. Sisoftware Sandra 2011, like AIDA64, exemplifies the ripple performance of the Bulldozer architecture and the FX-8150. In one measurement, it lags badly, in another it catches up, while in a third it is able to beat the entire field. The tuning was also able to result in significant percentages in the values. Since Bulldozer's strength lies in multi-threaded processing, we didn't expect much brilliance in connection with the Super Pi, somehow this program was never a favorite of AMD processors. Our guess was confirmed in the worst case scenario. The FX-8150 even lost to the Phenom, the Intel central units progressed in a different dimension. It is therefore better to forget Super Pi in connection with Bulldozer. wPrime is also a dry, synthetic test program, but unlike Super Pi, it can take advantage of more cores. According to the signs, it is unfortunately not enough, because the FX-8150 also failed in this test program. The Phenom II was able to keep up with the Intel units much better than the new architecture. The Fritz Chess Benchmark (Deep Fritz) is already capable of handling up to 12 threads, which means that the 980X could use all its power in this measurement. This can be seen, as it took a towering lead, but this test was already more to AMD FX's taste. We can't say that we got results corresponding to the eight cores, because we just managed to beat the 2500K, and the performance fell short of the 2600K (we managed to catch it with tuning), but it was clear that the FX-8150 likes it when all the eight cores may be in use. Compression and encoding: We used 7-ZIP for the first time in our measurements, maybe it was just about time. We installed the latest beta version, hoping that the differences between the number of cores (and threads) will be clearly visible. That's how it happened: not surprisingly, the 980X came out on top, but the FX-8150 was able to capture the 2600K, and when tuned, it accelerated significantly. We deployed the latest version of Winrar available at the time of the measurement, relying on the "Bulldozer support". This step was not in vain, as the FX-8150 practically outclassed the field, beating both the 2600K and 980X by a large margin. Encouraging signs for the future. dBpoweramp is also a newly introduced application, a simple and fast encoding program. During the measurement, we took a 93 MB FLAC file, which we encoded into MP3. At the end of the process, the program displayed the time required for transcoding, and we recorded this and entered it into the graph. This brought out the weaker form of Bulldozer, and it was at the bottom of the field, with the Intel CPUs again leading by half a lap. MediaEspresso is already a routine application during our tests. It is advantageous because it can be used with GPU acceleration in addition to CPU power, and it knows a lot of formats. We transcoded the 1080p raw material into four formats using pure CPU power. The results show that the power of the FX-8150 depends to a large extent on the given encoding format, but the Intel processors, more specifically the 2500K, were only squeezed or defeated in the case of m2ts and h.264. As its name suggests, X264 HD Benchmark specializes in this format, it is a quick and simple test program that runs in the command line and reports the result after encoding. The FPS values have been entered in the graph. Pass 1 gave the Intel CPUs the upper hand, while at pass 2 the FX-8150 managed to beat the 2500K and reach the level of the 2600K. With the help of TrueCrpyt, we can test the execution speed of operations related to AES encryption. The Phenom II does not yet have hardware AES support, so what we can see is. The other central units have the ability, however, and the FX-8150 is now performing quite well. It clearly beats 2500K, and manages to get close to 2600K, and even beats it hard with tuning. The 980X is the absolute king. Rendering: Cinebench R10 is an old engine, but it's still worth using because you can see how much the result achieved with one core matters when all cores and threads do the rendering. It's good to see the theory becoming practice in connection with the Bulldozer, according to which "core-to-core" is somewhat weaker than the previous generation, not to mention the Sandy Bridge architecture. In the second measurement, the eight cores come to life, and things immediately paint a different picture, but 2500K can still only be approached. On the other hand, the tuning produced serious results, the 2500K and 2600K were also beaten, only the 980X could overtake them. Cinebench 11.5 is the latest version of the previous application, here you can only measure using all cores+threads, but this program is nowadays considered a serious value measure in relation to multi-threaded instruction processing. In the introduction to this program, the "AMD graphics joke" about the FX-8150 and 980X came up, now we can see the harsh reality. It doesn't have much to do with the 980X, the 2500K is beaten by a small margin, but don't forget that the FX-8150 works with twice as many cores as the 2500K. Accordingly, the 2600K can no longer cope. You can also see that a possible new stepping, which could be sent into battle with a much higher clock signal, would help the situation of the Bulldozer a lot, because the patient accelerated a lot again as a result of the tuning. POV-Ray was put on hiatus for a while, but now it's back in the test apps for Bulldozer. We used the latest version 3.7 RC3, and then recorded the time required for rendering and the score obtained. It can be seen that the FX-8150 has repaid the trust this time, surpassing the Phenom, confidently beating the 2500K, and now it has managed to beat the 2600K as well, if only by a hair. The 980X didn't manage to pick up the gauntlet, but that's not a big surprise. LuxMark is also a first-time software used to measure rendering capabilities, even in GPU-accelerated mode. Now we just used the processor power and recorded the scores we got. We expected a little more from the FX-8150, it almost had to beat the 2500K with four cores, but it fell significantly short of the 2600K and 980X. We close this section with Photoshop, in which we ran a script that draws a nice calendar on the screen at the end of the operation. The time required for the execution was measured, so the lower value is better in the graph. AMD didn't like Photoshop until now, and apparently it won't either (it's true that we also tried CS5, but we got even worse results). The Intel CPUs compete a class higher, and the Bulldozer just about handles the Phenom. 3D and games: Finally, the two 3DMarks and the games! We were curious to see what forces the current king of Bulldozer architecture could mobilize in this area. Under Vantage, the situation is a bit contradictory, since in the Performance score the FX-8150 lags behind the Intel central units, and only the Phenom was able to achieve a better result with the MSI GeFroce 560 Ti, but in the CPU score we can see that the FX represents more power at 2500K. The tuning had a pretty good effect on the result, the 2600K and 980X were still not caught. 3DMark11 is now a much newer software with DX11 support and seems to be much more Bulldozer-friendly than its predecessor. During the Performance run, we managed to push down the 2500K, the FX was only a hair's breadth behind the 2600K, and with tuning it took the lead. The Xtreme score was even better for AMD's new wonder, which overall put all its opponents behind it. Let's see what Crysis 2 shows, armed with the DX11 patch and the latest measurement program! Moving towards higher resolutions, things become more and more limited, but the difference can be seen at the two lower resolutions, and it is clearly in favor of the Intel processors, although the difference can only be called significant at 1024×768. The tuning did not matter much during the measurement. During Battlefield 3, unfortunately, we were only able to include FRAPS measurement, and that too by always taking the same route at the beginning of the given course, in approximately the same amount of time. Nevertheless, the measurement cannot be 100% accurate, but perhaps you can see the point. In 1024×768, the Core CPUs are still in the lead, but the FX-8150 is not far behind them, and when switching to 1280×1024, the Bulldozer can even beat the two Sandy Bridges. The two higher resolutions are dangerously close to the limit, but it seems good that the FX-8150 is not far behind its competitors, in fact, 2500K and 2600K can be reached, and 980X can be reached. The tuning did not have much effect on the FPS values. Unfortunately, F1 2011 paints a much more negative picture of the FX-8150 than the previous two titles. There is no need to explain what you see, the Intel CPUs badly beat the AMD units in all resolutions. Here, the tuning at least resulted in some FPS, but this time only the Phenom II was managed, and not with much confidence. We come to our last graph with the results of an old friend, Far Cry 2. The FPS values followed the same trend as we saw in F1 2011, i.e. the numbers prove the total victory of the Intel models, it would be better to forget the performance of the FX-8150, but let's not forget that this is a very old engine, so only one or two of the eight cores could be used at most, and even Turbo Core couldn't help with that. Summary, opinion Let's say a few words about the AM3+ motherboards included in the test. Only the MSI 990FXA-GD80 could serve as an unknown, since the other two ASUS models were already able to flash their capabilities in a previous test, albeit with the Phenom II X4 970 BE processor. All three motherboards represent three different styles. The ASUS Crosshair V Formula is a ROG board, so there is no question about what it was born for. For playing and master tuning. It is no coincidence that the world record was also achieved with it in connection with DDR3 tuning and FX-8150 overclocking, where the clock signal of the CPU was raised up to 8544 MHz. Along with the Crosshair V Formula, we get the usual thickly packed box with the usual ROG accessories. The price of the motherboard also adjusts to this, which is currently around HUF 62. As always, we recommend this ROG board to those who strive for the maximum, but it is also important to be able to squeeze serious tuning out of their system. Overall, I really liked the ASUS CrossHair V Formula, just like last time. ASUS Crosshair V Formula The ASUS Sabertooth 990FX is a different kind of board. Of course, tuning is not an obstacle here either, but this model was designed for above-average stable operation and a long service life. This is confirmed by TUF (The Ultimate Force) components (capacitors, coils, MOSFETs), cooling with a special ceramic layer, and a 5-year manufacturer's warranty. In addition, the price of this model is quite friendly, it can be taken home for around 40 HUF, which is not a bad offer, so overall, with this price/performance ratio, Sabertooth deserves to be recommended. ASUS Sabertooth 990FX The MSI 990FXA-GD80 visited us for the first time, and we were satisfied with its performance. During the tests, it did its job stably, but it handled well with the FX-8150. This board is close in spirit to the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX. The TUF component in the former is here the Military Class II. Hi-C capacitors, DrMOS, SFC, these components that also meet the criteria of military standards are the reason for the stability and longevity offered by the MSI 990FXA-GD80, which also represents the top category in terms of equipment. The purchase price of HUF 57 for the motherboard is not small, but those who want to own the best and best-equipped MSI AM000+ board will have to come up with this amount from the piggy bank. The MSI 990FXA also comes with a 3-year manufacturer's warranty. The paper is not far from the recommended rating, but due to its somewhat high purchase price, it receives the rating it liked. MSI 990FXA-GD80 Thoughts on the Bulldozer and the FX-8150 We will refrain from summarizing by program this time, due to the fluctuation that is currently characteristic of the Bulldozer architecture and the FX-8150. Even within a test, it can show completely different performance regardless of the given area. During the measurements, it became clear that it is important for the FX-8150 to have as many modules as possible, i.e. as many cores as possible, because this is where its power lies. Despite the maximum Turbo Core clock speed of 4200 MHz during single or dual-thread processing, it does not seem to help AMD's new savior. What it already does quite well is compression, and in some cases rendering and coding, which is no wonder, since it is in these areas that we find most of the programs capable of pushing eight cores. Often, however, even among these applications, only the i5-2500K succeeds, which, let's face it, is not a steely performance with twice as many cores on board. During games, the situation is not terrible with the latest, most modern engines (which work with at least four cores), but with the previous engines, the FX gets in trouble. The same can be true for other programs, each new program version can make the given application almost "Bulldozer-ready", if we only think of Winrar 4.10 beta 3, for example. FX-8150 factory air cooling - source: legitreviews But what about the prices? So is it worth it or not? Due to the mentioned production difficulties, very few FX processors are currently rolling off the production line, so there is a general lack of stock of the FX series, with a slight exaggeration. This will probably also affect the prices, but of course the dollar and its exchange rate are not favorable for us Hungarians either. The recommended end-user price of the FX-8150 is 270 US dollars, which should be around HUF 60 here. Let's stay at $270 first. The current price tag for the Core i5-2500K is $205-$213, which is roughly $60 cheaper than the most powerful FX. The Core i7-2600K costs $294-$304, i.e. only $30 more expensive, and it can be considered much stronger in terms of performance. In our opinion, the purchase price of the FX-8150 is somewhat exaggerated, based on its current performance, somewhere around 2500K, around 210 dollars, would be a realistic amount of money asked for it. Factory water cooling of the FX-8150 - source: hothardware Don't forget, Sandy Bridge models are often not only faster, but also consume less and generate less heat, so cooling them is a much smaller task than keeping an FX-8150 CPU cool, thanks to the Also for an upper limit of 60 degrees Celsius. Let's look at the harsh Hungarian prices! A Core i5-2500K can be bought at the corner greengrocer for 55 HUF, while an i000-7K costs around 2600 HUF. In the few places where the FX-8150 is also available from stock, you can get it for around 70 ft. As an interesting fact, we would like to say that the six-core Phenom II X6 1100T is already available for HUF 49, so it is now considered a good buy for certain tasks. In light of what has been said, we could not recommend the FX-8150 against any of its competitors based on its current price and its shown form. Compared to this, we hear news that the small stock that is available is immediately snapped up abroad, so despite the lower-than-expected performance, there is a lot of interest in the new family. Is there a more beautiful still life? Our feeling is that Bulldozer is a big promise, and for now it remains so. The tuning revealed that at a significantly higher clock speed, the Bulldozer would often be capable of much more, which is no accident, since the architecture was originally designed in this spirit. However, this is all for naught if the current production technology and the consumption associated with the current stepping do not allow a clock signal higher than 3600 MHz in the case of eight cores. Right now, the best thing to do is to continue traveling with the DeLorean and jump ahead a few months, then a year. It would not be a huge surprise if the first B3 stepping processor, the AMD FX-8170, appeared in the first months of next year. According to preliminary news, this model would mean a performance increase of nearly 10%. So this will be the first step, but not the last. An FX series processor (FX-8190?) that can exceed the 4 GHz clock speed even without Turbo Core may appear already during the spring. Even with the naked eye, you can clearly see that the Bulldozer is already capable of high clock signals, but the consumption unleashed by the top models does not yet allow this. AMD still has a small reserve in hand. Jewelry or trinkets? In this segment - if not in the midst of cloudless joy - the TDP of 140 watts is still acceptable. We could find examples of this in both Phenom series. The next stop of the imaginary time travel is the summer of 2012, when the Vishera CPUs equipped with the Piledriver module may arrive. According to information obtained by DonanimHaber, we can expect 10% better x86 performance from the new product. The long-awaited Windows 8 may be ready at the end of the summer or the beginning of autumn. Obviously, it won't do miracles, but we wouldn't refuse a few percent (2-10) acceleration as a gift. It turned out that the AMD FX-8150 performance and presentation is not overwhelming, to say the least, but the Bulldozer architecture - due to the above examples - seems to be a good basis. We are sure that in 1 year AMD's current flagship will provide orders of magnitude higher performance than the current FX big gun. However, I liked the FX-8150 despite all its negative features. AMD Bulldozer architecture and AMD FX-8150 processor The MSI 990FXA-GD80 motherboard was provided by MSI's domestic representative, while the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX and Crosshair V Formula motherboards were provided by ASUS' domestic representative.
