On paper, he knows everything Xiaomi does, but does he keep what he promises?

Here is the cheapest laser robotic vacuum cleaner, we have tried this too!

Introductory

When the robotic vacuum cleaner called BlitzWolf BW-VC1 was introduced, I decided to order one. It was so cheap that the price rivaled that of a plain cordless handheld vacuum cleaner, so I wondered how much savings such a machine could remain despite the savings. On paper, it is even better than the Xiaomi robot in some features, but costs tens of thousands less in price, so it can be a real best buy if you really know everything the brochure promises. During the order and on arrival, the price dropped further, so it is now by far the cheapest in its category, so it has not even cooled down, I have unpacked and cleaned the apartment with it.

Packaging, accessories

The BlitzWolf BW-VC1 came in a large box to match the BlitzWolf, dominated by white and green. Folding up the lid, we first find a fairly chunky instruction and quick start-up guide that tells you in gorgeous English what to do if you want to turn it on.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 22

Peeling off the top cardboard, you will find the machine and the accessories next to it. You can feel the low price here because we can’t find replacement pieces from either the filter or the brush, so if they need to be replaced, we’ll be forced to order.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 21

In addition to the vacuum cleaner, the package only includes a docking and charging station, a European standard cable and a combined tool for cleaning the roller brush. The latter is a great treasure, similar to the Xiaomi Roborock S50, so we can easily cut the hair and hairs wrapped around the brush.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 20

We've taken the package out, let's see the machine!

External

You could say a typical robotic vacuum cleaner, round and black. From the outside, apart from the color, it’s strongly reminiscent of Xiaomi’s first-generation machine, but I remember it was only available in white. Going from front to back on the roof, we first find two buttons and an indicator LED, behind which is a hinged lid that hides the dust container, and finally the gun turret of the laser system.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 15

There is not much interesting on the site. At the front are two ultrasonic sensors, these live behind a collision-sensing front panel, behind a black grid. Seen from the front, there are two optical sensors on the right, probably an infrared LED and its sensor, on the back are the docking station, charging contacts and exhaust vents.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 17

The bottom of the vacuum cleaner is a little more interesting. Here we find four optical sensors, which can also be infrared sensors, and their role is mostly protection against falls. The front rotary axle wheel received an interesting rubber cover. The incisions cling perfectly to everything. True, this wheel is not driven, but I think the obstacles still make it easier to get through. The substantial part of the drive is done by the two large wheels with “off-road tires,” but how efficient they will be will be discussed later.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 14

There are three of the brushes, as opposed to the Xiaomi robots, for example, where we only find two. Here are two of the round brushes that sweep the dust under the machine, in front of the roller brush. The roller brush alternates the hairy and rubber parts, so it effectively collects dirt from both hard floors and carpets. These brushes are, of course, interchangeable and easy to remove and install.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 10

Anyway, here at the round brush, I noticed the first really tiny but pleasant moment on the machine. In addition to the part containing the three long strands, there is also a fourth one which serves to prevent the hairs from being wound on the shaft of the brush. Ingenious and practical thing!

BlitzWolf BW VC1 11

Let's see the physical endowments in headlines! The machine has a circular diameter of 346 millimeters and a height of 97 millimeters. This is an average size among smart robots, the fools are smaller and smaller than this. The reason for the latter discrepancy is that the laser sensor on the roof increases the height a bit. The vacuum cleaner weighs only 3 kilograms.

abilities

This will be an important chapter as the list of abilities will show if the BlitzWolf robot has a chance at all to kick a ball among the more expensive competitors. I'll shoot the joke, there's plenty, but let's see why!

BlitzWolf BW VC1 5

Since I’ve compared it to Xiaomi vacuum cleaners so far, let’s continue like this! Xiaomi's pre-generation machine has a suction power of 1800 Pa, which has been improved in the second series, so it already has 2000 Pa. In comparison, the suction power of the BlitzWolf BW-VC1 is 2200 Pa thanks to the NIDEC system carbon brush-free motor! Although the battery capacity (5200 mAh) is the same in the two Xiaomi and BlitzWolf, the cleaning time available on a single charge is 150 minutes for the Xiaomik and 180 minutes for the BlitzWolf, which is more energy efficient than the more expensive competition. As a result of the longer cleaning time, the area that can be cleaned with one charge has also become larger, it is 250 square meters for the Xiaomik and 280 square meters for the BlitzWolf. The dust container installed in the machine is large and easy to use. It has a capacity of 0,38 liters and is filtered by a washable plastic filter and a HEPA filter. The latter must be replaced after soiling.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 4

Before we get into the software capability, let’s talk a bit about the sensors! The most important, of course, is the rotating laser sensor on the roof. This system, called LIDAR, is supported by the SLAM algorithm and is able to create an accurate virtual map of our room based on the reflected laser beams. This map shows the furniture, the table and the chair legs, so anything that can be an obstacle.

The big advantage of the LIDAR system over camera solutions is that our privacy is much less compromised. Unfortunately, we hear stories of some smart TVs, for example, “watching” us through the built-in camera. This cannot happen with a laser system as it is not able to convey a real picture of us or our apartment.

Of course, we can try to make it harder for the vacuum cleaner with crossed-out wires, tilted brooms, and the like, but other sensors help you detect them and navigate in complex environments. I have already mentioned these above, but let us repeat them briefly.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 9

So in front there is a collision sensor and an ultrasonic sensor. The latter's task is to approach objects slowly, without, for example, tapping the legs of the chair, for example. The infrared sensor on the side of the machine monitors the distance from the wall, which means that if you have to walk in a straight line next to a piece of furniture or a wall, it helps to keep your distance from it.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 12

At the lower edge of the impact sensor plate, there are four infrared sensors that protect the vacuum cleaner from accidental falling. It would be unpleasant to slip down the stairs, but luckily we don’t have to be afraid of that. We don’t have to worry about getting stuck under the furniture either, it senses this too, and it starts in the opposite direction in time before it finally gets stuck.

blitzwolf BW VC1 app 12

There is no significant difference between Xiaomi and BlitzWolf vacuum cleaners in terms of cleaning methods. In addition to the traditional automatic cleaning mode, the BlitzWolf robot is able to vacuum a designated area. The selection can be a regular rectangle, but you can also draw an irregular area on the map with your finger. In addition, you can request a quick and intensive cleaning of a specific area, in which case the machine will sweep and vacuum in a spiral from the center of the area.

 blitzwolf BW VC1 app 16

The area selection can also be inverse, in which case you can mark parts where you do not want the machine to work. In addition, the software also supports the virtual wall feature, so you can set exactly what you want or don’t want to clean up.

 blitzwolf BW VC1 app 13

It is also important to mention that although the machine plans the cleaning path in real time on the map created by the laser sensor, we are able to save maps and reload them later. This is a great help, for example, if you live in a multi-storey house and take the robot upstairs by hand. In this case, we just load the floor map and we can start cleaning without wasting time with the mapping.

As I’ve written several times, I stick to the principle that a picture says more than a thousand words, so you get a lot of pictures of the software. I’ve already put up a 1-1 screenshot in the capabilities, but the good thing comes below.

blitzwolf BW VC1 app 2

As for the software, you can say it in English, but luckily you don’t want to communicate with us in big circular sentences, so if you can’t speak English with a Google compiler you can still do it smoothly. In terms of capabilities, I covered basically everything, maybe one important thing is left out, namely how the program tracks the distance the vacuum cleaner has traveled, how many hours it has been cleaned, and also calculates when to change the brushes and HEPA filter. So we don't have to keep that in mind either, you can also see in the images the interface on which the software shows how much time is left until the replacement.

blitzwolf BW VC1 app 6

The map function, the drawing of the map is very similar to the case of Xiaomik, maybe the graphics are a little worse, the drawn lines are not so regular, but this is more the case with the search for the knot in the poop, because I can not really tie anything else.

While writing the article, trying out the machine, I realized that there are two points that I either just didn’t find anywhere in the settings, or with noble simplicity, it isn’t in it. One is the carpet mode, ie the automatic detection of carpets, the other is the possibility to change the volume (suction power). The former in Xiaomik results in the fact that if the vacuum cleaner is not used at full suction power, it switches to full speed when it reaches the carpet to completely extract the dirt. The second feature comes in handy if you want to clean the machine at night, for example, or the child is asleep, in which case we can turn down the volume. True, the suction power decreases with this, but for something. So I miss these abilities a bit, even if I don’t run to the wall in my grief without them.

By the end of the news, the manufacturer promises that a software update will arrive soon, which will allow the vacuum cleaner to be integrated into the Alexa smart home ecosystem, so that, for example, it will be possible to control it with sound.

Let's see the pictures!

Commissioning, use, experience

Perhaps this chapter is what you will appreciate the most, as it is here that I will try to describe all my experiences.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 8

Installation begins by downloading the appropriate software to your phone. We also get a QR code for this, so we don’t have to search. If the program is running on the phone, you press and hold the cottage and the power button on the machine at the same time, and then when the machine says it is ready to connect, we start adding the device on the phone. Once you have the vacuum cleaner we will give you the password to access the wifi and we are ready. From now on, we will be able to control the operation from the phone.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 13

I haven’t written about the dock (charger) yet because I thought it would have more of a place here to demonstrate how it works. Unfortunately, the charger is not as practical as the Xiaomi Roborock S50. There, the machine is parked on a large plastic platform that snaps together with the charging backplate. When the machine attaches it to the plastic sheet at the same time, it cannot move the back cover on its own. Well, BlitzWolf doesn’t have a plastic sheet like this, so the machine tends to shift the charging unit. For this reason, we can only place it where there is something behind it that supports it (such as a wall) so that the vacuum cleaner cannot move it. Anyway, this charging unit, more precisely its contacts are very practical. With two large spring-loaded plastic strips and a plastic contact sheet on top, the vacuum cleaner was always connected flawlessly, there was no problem with docking.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 16

Okay, with the software installed, the vacuum cleaner on the dock is charged, cleaning can begin. As a first step, I set up a “test track” in the kitchen where I placed a lot of chairs around the table, laid down a cable, laid the broom There is a metal rail between the laminate flooring in the hallway and the kitchen stone that is smooth, slippery and although not too high, one side is broken off so that so far all the vacuum cleaners have bled on it. I sprayed everything on the floor, from the crumbs through the cat hair taken out of the hand vacuum cleaner to the larger dry bread hair, that got my hands on it, so the hard track was over.

After turning it on, the first thing that appeared was that BlitzWolf was louder than the Xiaomi Roborock S50. Soon, somewhere the first-generation Xiaomi vacuum cleaner could be on the same level, so it’s far from unbearable. Of course, knowing that the suction power is higher, we already know the reason for the extra sound.

After starting, the LIDAR system does its job well, the map "builds up" on our phone's display with lightning speed. The vacuum cleaner then runs along the walls and, if the room so desires, divides the area to be cleaned into several parts, which it will then walk through one after the other.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 18

The cleaning itself was no longer a surprise, as I haven’t worked with a robot of similar ability in recent years. I’m just saying it carefully because I’m not 100 percent sure, but it’s as if planning the Roborock S50 route was a hair’s breadth better. However, it can be seen in the attached picture that it went through everything nicely, so overall there was no problem.

Which is very gratifying that he fought his way out of distressed situations. There were times when he got mixed up between his legs, my partner had already said that the vacuum cleaner was stuck, but just then he found a way out nicely, even though I had built a serious maze for him. I really liked that he also solved the said slippery metal rail. He walked in front of him, but the big wheels slid nicely as I expected, so he couldn’t even squirm from the gateway into the kitchen. Yes, but when I had already booked that this machine didn’t get through backwards and ran into it again, but not from the front, but from such a 45-degree angle. He got through it smoothly.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 19

Of course, the extender “accidentally” crossed on the ground was no problem either, as was the broomstick obstacle. At Xiaomin, for example, he had to pay attention because he climbed on such low pipes without a hitch, then rocked a little on top and got stuck for good. The BlitzWolf vacuum cleaner didn’t want to get through it, bypassed it and worked on the other side.

There can be no complaint about the quality of the cleaning. He gathered everything without residue, somehow shoveling even a fingerful of dry bread crumbs into the powder container.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 1

Speaking of the dust container, it’s important to mention that for the Xiaomi Roborock S50, that was the part I hated the most. Sometimes the container got stuck in the dust so I had to knock it out with a knife. There is no such error with BlitzWolf. On the one hand, the capacity is quite large, 0,38 liters, so it fits a lot of dirt, on the other hand, there is a large fold-up tab on the top, which makes it easy to lift, even when full. I really like this!

Okay, let's sum up the experience!

Conclusion

I’ve tried to cover every little thing in the article, but if there’s a question left, don’t let it stretch, put it up under the article, I’ll try to answer it.

As the writing shows, the BlitzWolf BW-VC1 is a really well done machine. He has abilities that make him grow above Xiaomi, but he has shortcomings that make him noticeably lag behind him. True, I prefer this lag to second- or third-generation Xiaomi robots, which also know the MOP function, because with the first generation, BlitzWolf is essentially in par. This is important only because, as I wrote in the introduction, the price of BlitzWolf is much, roughly $ 100 lower, ie almost 30 forints less than for the more famous competitor. That $ 100 means that BlitzWolf specifically costs only two-thirds of Xiaomi’s first-generation machine, or let’s say we get three BlitzWolves for the price of two Xiaomi. This is a significant difference, so much so that for that much money, more powerful cordless handheld vacuum cleaners are usually measured, rather than a smart vacuum cleaner equipped with a laser system.

BlitzWolf BW VC1 2

The question of whether it’s worth the price isn’t even a real question, of course, it’s worth it, in fact, it’s well worth it. Some of the little things mentioned above like the lack of carpet mode are a forgettable shortcoming because in every other respect we get a perfect machine with the knowledge that we mostly encounter only in the upper category.
