The first three-layer HD DVD, named after Toshiba, was unveiled at CES.

From the three layers and the storage capacity in the title, our readers could quickly calculate that this assumes 17 GB of data per layer, compared to the 15 GB capacity of the "traditional", single-layer HD DVD disc.

Theoretically, 51GB is enough to store 7 hours of high-definition video with a bit rate of 17 Mbps. Toshiba’s new development - remember the HD DVD format is due to them - could receive DVD Forum certification later this year, so the first such discs could hit stores before the end of the year.

Unfortunately, we have no information on whether current HD DVD players would be able to recognize a three-layer disc, but a negative answer is very likely.
