A really bad world may come to hard drives next year, but the emerging market is still open.
According to Jim Handy, head of Objective Analysis, in 2019, the specific cost per GB of NAND flash chips will be barely $ 0,08. If we add to this amount everything that is needed for a solid state drive (DRAM chip, controller, other electronic components), we still get quite attractive numbers:
- 480-512 GB - Under $ 70
- 1,0 TB to $ 120 in height
- 2,0 TB - around $ 200
Favorable prices are attributed to brutal oversupply, which in turn can even jeopardize weaker manufacturers over time - most can otherwise offset the losses here with DRAM profits. The price reduction is also accelerated by the introduction of QLC (4-bit cell), which increases data density while reducing production costs.
